Düperthal Sicherheitstechnik GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer of safety storage cabinets and complete system solutions for the storage of hazardous substances. The headquarters are in Karlstein am Main in Bavaria. The company is part of the Hanning Group, which is based in Oerlinghausen.

History[edit]

In 1953, Willy Düperthal founded a company in Karlstein for the manufacture of office furniture. In the early 1970s, the company BASF was looking for a cabinet to store flammable liquids. As no suitable cabinet was available on the market, Düperthal was asked for advice. At that time, Düperthal was the supplier of office furniture to BASF and had already developed a self-extinguishing waste-paper basket. Following this request, Düperthal drafted a profile of requirements, which would later form part of the first German standard for safety storage cabinets (DIN 12925). A cabinet was built that closed automatically in case of fire and stayed closed for a certain period of time. This cabinet was patented and presented to the public in 1972.

As a result, Willy Düperthal founded Düperthal Sicherheitstechnik GmbH in November 1972 and started manufacturing and distributing cabinets and containers for the safe storage of ignitable substances[1].

In 2005, the company became part of the Hanning Elektro-Werke Beteiligungs GmbH. As a consequence, the Düperthal Beteiligungs GmbH[2] was founded in Oerlinghausen.

Company[edit]

The Düperthal GmbH & Co. KG based in Karlstein am Main with its production site in Oerlinghausen, North-Rhine Westphalia, is part of the Hanning Group.

The company plays an important and relevant role to that extent that it has maximized workplace safety when it comes to handling hazardous substances. It has designed and built safety storage cabinets with a fire resistance of max. 90 minutes to store flammable liquids. Thus, in case of fire, the flammable substances will not further fuel the fire and cause uncontrolled explosions for at least 90 minutes.

With regards to the concept of a safety storage cabinet, Düperthal has been regarded as the actual inventor and as a pioneer in this field in Europe and even worldwide. The safety storage cabinets are certified according to the standards DIN EN 14470-1, DIN EN 14470-2 and DIN EN 14727.

Today, the company focuses on digitization within a laboratory or workplace and develops concepts of how to integrate storage and disposal systems for hazardous substances into the overall digital setup.

Düperthal owns various patents[3]  and its products are mentioned as a reference in various specialist publications. The company is a member of the European Committee for Standardization and contributed as early as the 1980s to setting up uniform standards for storing flammable liquids at the workplace.
