DC Solar was a private company that manufactured solar PV modules and provided turn-key solar energy solutions. The compamy sponsored racing. It turned out to be a more than $1 billion ponzi scheme.[1][2][3] The couple behind it used investor money to pay off earpy investors and buy dozens of luxury vehicles.[4]

Company history

Founded in 2005 in Concord, California by Jeffery Carpoff, DC Solar operated as a solar energy equipment provider. DC Solar said it employed 200 workers. DC Solar claimed to be ushering the way into a new era of clean, competitive, mainstream power.

Berkshire Hathaway invested $340 million in the company.[5] Carpoff and his wife spent lavishly on properties, jets, jewelry, and a semi-professional baseball team. Federal authorities auctioned a.} car collection they amassed of more than 150 classic and contemporary cars.[6]

Involvement in Auto Racing

DC Solar has sponsored two NASCAR races and one race track renovation project the first one being in 2016 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the second one being with the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Phoenix International Raceway. DC Solar announced in early 2017 that they would be sponsoring the renovation of Phoenix International Raceway and set to be finished in November of 2017.

In 2015 it was announced DC Solar would be the main sponsor for part time driver Brennan Poole in the no. 42 car. They also sponsored Kyle Larson and Justin Marks as associate sponsors for the rest of the year and had a best finish of 9th from Poole.

In 2016 DC Solar returned as a full time sponsor for Brennan Poole in the new no. 48 car and now served as an associate sponsor for every Chip Ganassi Racing car that was fielded. The most notable thing from this year was the two third place finishes put up by Poole at Talladega Superspeedway and Road America.

Once again in 2017 DC Solar returned as the sponsor for Brennan Poole and once again as an associate sponsor for all other cars in Chip Ganassi Racing. There is much speculation on what they will do next season but they are believed to be returning to Chip Ganassi with Brennan Poole.
