Don State Agrarian University (Don SAU, formerly known as Don Agrarian institute – the oldest and one of the largest universities in the South of Russia is located in the Rostov Region.

HISTORY

      The history of the University dates back to 1840. Those days a veterinary school was opened on the outskirts of Warsaw. Later it was transformed into a higher education veterinary institution. During the First World War the University was transferred to Novocherkassk. At the same time an agronomic educational institution was successfully developing in stanitsa Persianovskaya.
      In 1962 after a series of reforms and renamings veterinary and agronomy institutes were merged into Don Agrarian Institute in stanitsa Persianovskaya. In 1993, Don Agrarian Institute was given higher status for educational institution and was transformed into University.
      Over the years of existence, Don State Agrarian University has trained over 130,000 specialists who made a significant contribution to the development of Russian agricultural science and production. Don State Agrarian University was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR for its merits in training highly qualified specialists.
       In 2014, the Novocherkassk State Reclamation Academy and the Azov-Black Sea State Agro engineering Academy were joined to the University. A joint University has been created on the basis of the Don SAU, which graduates specialists for the agro industrial complex and related industries. 
       In the operational management of the University are 313 buildings and structures with a total area of over 316,400 square meters, of which educational and laboratory 203,200 square meters.
       In the National Rating of Universities of the Russian Federation (published IFA (International Foreign Agency) “Russia today” in December 2018) Don State Agrarian University occupies the 5th position in the nomination “Agricultural Universities”. In the ranking of the international information group Interfax (published in June 2018) the University takes the 9th position among agricultural universities in Russia, while it leads in the Socialization category and takes 3d place in the Research category.

RECTORS In 1962, a professor Ponteleymon Efimovich Ladan was appointed as a rector of the joint institute In 1980, professor Vladimir Ivanovich Stepanov became the rector of DAI In 2002, Anatoly Ivanovich Baranikov became the rector of Don SAU Since December 2013, the rector of the Don SAU is Alexander Ivanovich Klimenko

UNIVERSITY ACTIVITY

       Don SAU is a large regional center for agricultural education, which provides training for educational programs of higher, secondary vocational and additional professional education. The University carries out research, makes a significant contribution to the development of the economy, science, engineering and technology of the agro industrial complex of the Rostov Region, the Southern Federal District and the Russian Federation as a whole.
       The University has three dissertation councils for the defense of doctoral and PhD theses:

Thesis Board D.220.028.01 (agricultural sciences, Don SAU); Thesis Board D.999.021.02 (technical sciences, Azov-Black Sea Engineering Institute of Don SAU – Stavropol State Agrarian University); Thesis Board D.999.214.02 (technical and agricultural science, Novocherkassk Land Reclamation Institute – FSBNU, “Russian Research Land Reclamation Institute.”)

       Over 10,000 students study at the university and its branches. One of the priority activities of the University in the educational field is the development of practice-oriented training in cooperation with large agricultural enterprises and research centers. Among the partners of the educational institution are agribusiness holding companies Miratorg, Yug Rusi, Steppe, a group of agricultural enterprises Resource, LLC (limited liability company) Group Agrokom, JSC firm Agrokompleks named after N.I. Tkachyev, MCC Eurochem, the companies Rostselmash and Bryanskselmash, other leaders of the agricultural sector of Russia. In addition, students practice in agricultural enterprises in European countries – Germany, France.
       In the Don GAU, more than 500 foreign citizens from 13 countries study (data as of January 1, 2019), including non-CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries – the Republic of Zambia, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. On the basis of the University branch, there is a preparatory department for foreign applicants, in the framework of which students are trained in Russian language and specialized disciplines.
       The Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) of the Don GAU provides training in continuing education (competence development) programs, professional retraining programs, apprenticeship programs and additional general developmental programs. Annually, over 4000 students use the additional educational services provided by the ICE, most of which are agricultural workers.
