DR. JADALA SHANKARASWAMY

Jadala Shankaraswamy (also published as J. Shankaraswamy) is an Indian horticultural scientist, academic, and researcher serving as Assistant Professor (Senior Scale) in the Department of Fruit Science at the College of Horticulture, Mojerla, under Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTSHU), Telangana, India.[1][2] He is known for his interdisciplinary research in post-harvest technology, pomology, nano-biotechnology, phytochemistry, IoT, Sensor, Machine Learning[3], Quantum, Applied Vedic Science and value addition of horticultural crops, and is a recipient of the Chancellor's Gold Medal and several international scientific awards.[4][5]

Early life and education

Shankaraswamy is a native of the Karimnagar district of Telangana, India[6]. He began his higher education by enrolling in a B.Sc. in Horticulture programme (2001–2005) at Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad[7]. He subsequently completed his M.Sc. in Post-Harvest Technology of Horticultural Crops (2005–2007) at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal[8]. He earned his Ph.D. in Horticulture, with specialisation in Fruit Science, from Junagadh Agricultural University, Gujarat, in 2013[9]. For his doctoral work, he was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal in recognition of his overall academic excellence[10][11]

He has also qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) in Horticulture and Fruit Science and was a recipient of the ICAR Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF)[12].

Academic and professional career

Shankaraswamy has more than twelve years of teaching and research experience across multiple Indian institutions[13]. His teaching career spans appointments at Amity University, Noida; Lovely Professional University, Punjab; Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad; and APAC College, Tamil Nadu[14].

He also served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research, Anand, Gujarat[15].

He currently teaches courses on Fruit Science, Post-Harvest Management, and Processing of Horticultural Crops[16] [7]. He is listed as a faculty member in the official staff directory of the College of Horticulture, Mojerla, SKLTGHU[17].

Research

Shankaraswamy's research interests are interdisciplinary and span post-harvest technology and value addition of horticultural crops[18]. His work also includes pomology and medicinal & aromatic plants[19]. He is active in nano-biotechnology and phytochemistry applied to horticulture[20]. Additional areas of focus include chemoinformatics, horticultural therapy, and natural product chemistry[21]. He also conducts research on plant DNA barcoding for species identification and on biotechnological work involving telomeres and G-quadruplex structures[22]. Green chilli powder innovation

Shankaraswamy is recognised as a pioneer in the development of green chilli powder produced without synthetic chemical means[28]. The Indian Patent Office (Intellectual Property India) granted him a patent for the method of producing green chilli powder and related products [6]. He has stated that the innovation is intended to serve as a healthier alternative to red chilli powder, which is often adulterated with carcinogenic 'Sudan' azo dyes[29].

Selected publications

His most cited paper, on the stabilisation of the i-motif DNA structure at physiological pH, was published in Biopolymers in 2017[30]. He authored a 2012 review titled "Flowering manipulation in mango: A science comes of age"[31]. With A. K. Banik, he published "Processing and quality evaluation of guava squash" in the Journal of Applied Horticulture in 2011[32]. His 2022 paper in RSC Advances describes structural changes in the human c-Myc promoter G-quadruplex upon peptide binding[33]. In 2024, he published an IoT and machine-learning study on post-harvest shelf-life prediction for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) in the Journal of Environmental Biology[34]. He has also contributed the chapter "Utilisation of Plum Peels and Seeds" to the CRC Press Handbook of Plum Fruit (2022)[35].
