DTCF liquidation
The DTCF liquidation started as a result of the dismissal of four faculty members from the Faculty of Languages, History and Geography of Ankara University in 1948 on the grounds that they were communists.
Beginning
The liquidation movement DTCF Dean Prof. Dr. It begins with Enver Ziya Karal's report to the Ministry of National Education on 13 December 1945. In this report, it was stated that Associate Professor Behice Boran, Associate Professor Pertev Naili Boratav and Associate Professor Niyazi Berkes promised to write for a journal "published in Istanbul and whose political view does not accept reconciliation with scientific thought", and that this situation posed inconveniences for education at school. The magazine in question was Zekeriya Sertel's magazine named "Görüşler". Before this report, N. Halil Onan, Director of Higher Education, had stated in a letter to the Minister of National Education Hasan Âli Yücel that it was objectionable for Boratav, Boran and Niyazi-Mediha Berkes couple to stay at the university because of their opinions. After these articles, on December 15, 1945, the mentioned faculty members were removed from active education and placed under the command of the Ministry. Thereupon, faculty members applied to the Council of State. On March 26, 1946, the Council of State annulled the liquidation decision unanimously.
Nationalist reactions
Hearing that the academic members accused of being communist had returned to the university, the nationalist students applied to the Ministry of National Education and demanded that Behice Boran and Pertev Boratav be expelled from the university. Not only that, they raided the hall where Boratav was going to give a lecture that day, protesting there and demanding the resignation of the rector, and forced Rector Şevket Aziz Kansu to sign a letter of resignation.
The police and gendarmerie were able to get Rector Kansu out of his room by blockading the faculty. The students left the faculty and surrounded the building where the Community Centers were located, and caused great damage by entering the left-wing Turkish Youth Association branch.
After the events, an investigation was opened against Boratav, Boran, Niyazi Berkes and Muzaffer Şerif Başoğlu.
Investigation
Two hundred witnesses, from other faculty members to nationalist students, were interviewed during the investigations. Boratav, Boran and Berkes were tried in Ankara 4th Criminal Court of First Instance. As a result of the trial, Boratav was acquitted, but Boran and Berkes were sentenced for "abuse of office", but this sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court. As a result, all the professors on trial were acquitted.
As a result of the Supreme Court's overturning the decision, the CHP Government decided to abolish the faculty members in order to get rid of them. In accordance with the draft that was discussed in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on July 5, 1948, the positions of these faculty members were abolished.
Results
These events, which took place in Ankara University DTCF, where different political views frequently come across both in education and training levels, led to the exacerbation of political right-left fights throughout the country. The political environment, which was already tense with the Tan Newspaper Raid and the Racism-Turanism Case, became even more tense. After these events, professors accused of being communist approached the Democratic Party group. This led the Democratic Party to receive accusations of communism. Thereupon, the Democrat Party and Fevzi Çakmak, who stood close to them, stated that the Minister of National Education Hasan Âli Yücel was protecting the communists and accused the CHP.
