DUST (Film Studio)

DUST, a division of independent studio Gunpowder & Sky, is a sci-fi post cable network launched in 2016 that focuses on science fiction content and has amassed over 3 million followers across its various platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, VRV, Pluto TV, Xumo, NBC WatchBack, Vizio, and the TBD Channel.[1]

Most recently DUST acquired the feature film Prospect at SXSW. The film was written and directed by Zeek Earl and Christopher Caldwell and stars Pedro Pascal, Sophie Thatcher, and Jay Duplass. This was the first film release under the DUST label and had a November 2nd theatrical release in the US.[2] “Prospect” is available on DVD/Blu-Ray and VOD platforms.

DUST's sci-fi short film Bad Peter, which stars Golden-Globe nominated Frankie Shaw (“SMILF”), was an official selection at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.[3] The film was written and directed by Levi Strauss and is about an expecting mother forced into a humiliating birthing regiment by her personal automated assistant. In 2018, DUST partnered with Futurism to create a short-form scripted series that explores the growth of our science and technology in relation to the human condition. The seven part series premiered on the Facebook Watch platform in 2018.[5] The series stars Tony Cavalero, Leven Rambin, Carter Jenkins, Godfrey, Quddus, Martha Hunt, and Ricardo Hurtado. [6]

Through a partnership with USC's School of Cinematic Arts, DUST has premiered a number of well-known directors short films they made while students. This includes George Lucas’ 1967 short film, “Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB,” followed by Robert Zemeckis’ 1972 student short “The Lift,” and recently Rian Johnson's “Evil Demon Golf Ball From Hell!!!” [3]

On August 18, 2018, launched a free-to-stream channel on Roku devices called DUSTx. Initially only available on Roku, DUSTx has since expanded to new platforms such as Samsung TV Plus, Twitch, and STIRR. [7] Some titles available on the channel are feature films such as “Event Horizon” and “Coneheads,” as well as series such as the original “Mystery Science Theater 3000”, “Ray Bradbury's Science Theater” and “Beyond Westworld.” DUSTx also offers a number of short film such as “Rise”, “Jonah”, and the Penny Arcade series “Automata.” DUST is the only place to watch, for free, the entire series of “ROSWELL,” which stars Katherine Heigl, Shiri Appleby, and Colin Hanks.[3]

DUST's upcoming releases include a new sci-fi short film Zero which stars Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones and The Occupant by Peter Cilellia. DUST is also in development for series projects with Heroes co-creator Tim Kring. [7]
