DWService
DWService is a remote desktop software solution developed by DWSNET OÜ, a virtual company based in Estonia. It is available on various operating systems, namely Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Wandboard and Pine64.
How does DWService work ?
Traditionally, remote desktop software requires two components: one installed on the remote computer and one on the machine at hand. This software enables a secure connection between the two computers. DWService differs from other popular remote desktop software by enabling users to access their remote machine from a web browser. DWService relies on a small piece of software - called an agent - installed on the computer which needs to be remotely accessed. This agent offers a secured tunnel - via HTTPS - to encrypt a connection with a web browser. The DWService agent has been open sourced on GitHub.[1]
The connection itself relies on nodes[2], or servers, that are established around the world by the community. The agent installed on the remote computer will connect to the closest or least loaded node in order to provide a fast, reliable connection when accessed by a user. DWService currently has nodes set up in California, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Singapore and Brazil.
DWService features
DWService provides six web-based applications[3] in order to remotely control a computer.
Files and Folders enables users to access the documents stored on the local or external disks connected to the remote machine.
Screen is a VNC solution to access the screen of the remote machines with an option to choose the desktop for each connected display. The use of mouse and keyboard can be disabled as well.
Resource gives an overview of the remote system information by providing details on several specifications such as memory, processors, disks, processes and services. This app also enables the user to start or stop a service.
Shell enables the user to start a terminal session on the remote machine.
Text editor is an application which allows users to create, edit or simply open a document on the remote machine. It is compatible with a wide variety of filetypes such as .txt, .html, .css, .php...
Log Watch is a journal app recording all activities that occur on a remote machine.
Business model
To fund DWService, DWSNET OÜ relies on two sources of income.
While DWService is free for anyone, the company has a range of premium subscriptions. The company currently has six monthly and annual plans which unlock more bandwidth when connecting to a remote machine. The additional bandwidth results in a smoother overall experience.
DWService can also be integrated in other applications with the use of APIs. Developers can enrich their current software by integrating the DWService application programming interfaces in their project by buying credits according to their needs. For instance, an IT support company can develop software with several tools and among those the DWService Screen application. This company will buy credits according to the number of agents installed on remote computers as well as the number of connections required for the IT experts.[4]
