DZUP 1602 (1602 kHz in Metro Manila) is an AM campus radio station owned and operated by the University of the Philippines Diliman. Its studio facility is located at the 2nd floor, Media Center of the College of Mass Communication, U.P. At present, the station operates from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Mondays to Fridays, and is able to broadcast all year-round (including semestral breaks). DZUP 1602 kHz is heard all over Metro Manila, Pampanga, Cavite, Bulacan, and Laguna. Its tagline 'Kasali Ka' aims to convey the message that DZUP is not only for the UP community but also for everyone who actively participates in matinong usapan para sa maunlad na bayan. The station can also be heard through online streaming.

It serves as the community radio station of the U.P. Diliman campus, which has also become the bastion of freedom of expression and academic freedom within the university.

History[edit]

DZUP began its broadcast in 1958 at the frequency of 1580 kilocycles, transmitted at 500 watts (but later increased to 2 kilowatts).[citation needed]

The station was closed in 1972 during the Martial Law of the Marcos regime, due to itself being the vocal of anti-Marcos movement. By the time of the People Power Revolution which ousted Marcos's dictatorship, DZUP resumed its operations in 1987, this time at 1566 KHz, before transferred to its current frequency at 1602 KHz since 1994.

On February 1, 2010, DZUP began its broadcast from a newly-acquired 5,000-watt transmitter tower, which was funded by the University's Office of the Chancellor.[citation needed]

In 2017, DZUP marked its countdown for their upcoming 60th anniversary.[citation needed]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Over the recent years, DZUP has been nominated for Best AM Station for four (4) non-consecutive years at the KBP Golden Dove Awards. Aside from the station, most of its programs, special promotional materials and public service announcements were recognized by the KBP, the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA), and other award-giving organizations.[3][4]
