Biography

Early life

D.R. Venkataramanan (ಡಿ.ಆರ್.ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣನ್), also known by pen names Mani or Revathi, was born on 21st February 1931 in Hanur village to a Telugu-speaking Aravelu Brahmin family. His father was D.K. Ramachandra Iyer and mother Subbulakshmi. His father was a postmaster, and hence used to get transferred often. So DRV stayed back in Kollegal to continue his studies up to SSLC. Later he joined Mysore Maharaja College and stayed with his uncle and aunt. He joined Saint Joseph's College for a BA degree which was under the then Madras University. As he had got double promotion in his primary school, he finished his BA degree very early in life. Later, he studied Economics for two years at the famous Banaras Hindu University. Though he had dreams of pursuing a PhD at Harold Laski Institute of Economics or appearing for IAS exams, unfortunately both did not materialize. He applied for a Central Government job and was posted in the Accountant General Office, Hyderabad.

In Hyderabad, he had the opportunity to listen to many great singers like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and he also started to read Western philosophy. He was a voracious reader.

In 1956, he got transferred to Bangalore and had the privilege of meeting the Bheeshmacharya of Kannada literature Dr. D.V. Gundappa. DRV became an active member of the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA, Basavanagudi, Bangalore) founded by DVG. Later he became one of his foremost disciples.

Gokhale Institute had a study circle. The study classes were conducted by Dr. DVG for a group of young disciples consisting of DRV, M.V.Rama Chaitanya, B.S.Subbaraya, T.N.Padmanabhan, G.N.Josh, R.V. Prabhakar Rao, K.Srikantiah, Mattur Krishna Murthy, N.S. Subbanna, Padmamma Nittoor, Panduranga Rao, T.L. Rangaswamy and many others.

DRV learnt Sanskrit from the famous Sanskrit scholar Vidvan N.Ranganatha Sharma. He knew Tamil and Telugu also which enabled him to translate works from Telugu and Tamil to Kannada.

DRV had many interesting hobbies from childhood like coin collection, stamp collection, newspaper reading, collecting articles featuring Mahatma Gandhi, astronomy and palmistry.

The 90th-year birthday celebration of DRV was held in March 2021 at the Women’s peace league, Bangalore. A commemoration book called “D.R.Venkataramanan tombattaneya varshada smarana sanchike” was released. The book consists of photographs and articles about DRV. The function was attended by Sri.K. Natarajan, grandson of DVG and nephew Sri.Chandramouli.
