Dadan Hindayana was born in Garut, West Java, Indonesia. He completed his secondary education at Cimindi State Senior High School in Bandung Regency (now SMA Negeri 13 Bandung) in 1986, where he was a classmate of Agus Subiyanto, the future Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces.

From his undergraduate studies through his doctoral research, Hindayana specialized in the field of entomology, the scientific study of insects.

Career

Hindayana began his professional career as a lecturer at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), where he later held several strategic administrative positions. He served as Secretary of the Office for the Preparation of Autonomy Implementation (2001–2002), Director of the Directorate of Institutional Development and Supporting Enterprises (2003–2008), and Acting Director of the Directorate of Cooperation (2007–2008).

Case

On 3 June 2026, Hindayana was named a suspect and detained by the Attorney General's Office of Indonesia in connection with an alleged corruption case involving the management of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program at the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). Prosecutors alleged irregularities in the procurement of several items, including electric motorcycles, footwear, and televisions, resulting in suspected markups in procurement costs.[4][5]

Controversies

Several statements and policies made by Hindayana during his tenure as Head of the National Nutrition Agency attracted public attention and controversy, including:

Two litres of milk per day

During a working visit to the Syaichona Muhammad Cholil Islamic Boarding School in Bangkalan, Hindayana stated that he consumed two litres of milk per day. The remark was criticized by some members of the public as unrealistic and unrelated to the discussion at hand. Hindayana later clarified that the statement reflected his personal experience and was not an official recommendation of the National Nutrition Agency.[6]

Free Nutritious Meals during Ramadan

Hindayana announced that the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program would continue during the month of Ramadan under a modified distribution mechanism. The policy generated considerable public discussion and debate regarding its implementation.[7]
