Daku Om Puri

Daku Om Puri (also known as Babo Om Puri) was a notorious Dacoit of 20th-century born in 1915 from the Sankra village in the Jaisalmer / Pokhran region of western Rajasthan's Thar desert region. Historically famed in local folklore as a land of daring men—he commanded a powerful gang that struck fear across Pokhran, Jaisalmer, and Marwar. Om Puri belonged to a family of Dacoits.

His father, Pratap Puri, was also a Dacoit. When his father was captured and imprisoned in Sindh (now Pakistan), Om Puri famously crossed the border with his nephew Lal Puri to break him out of jail.

The Encounter: After years of evading authorities, local information led a heavy armed police and military force to surround him near a desert pond called Satlani Nadi in the Pokhran-Phalodi belt. He was killed by Thakur Bhawar Megh Singh of Jamba.

His body was taken to Phalodi for the postmartum, where doctors conducted the examination. The doctors were astonished to find that Om Puri’s height was seven feet, heart weighed two-and-a-half *ser* (approximately 2.3 kg), his body weight was 120 kg, and his chest measured 52 inches, The forehead was eight fingers wide.
