Dale Guy Madison, (born March 22, 1958) is an American television personality, host, actor and writer. He is best known for being the first openly gay host on the home-shopping television network, QVC from 1991 to 1995.[1]

Early life and Education[edit]

Madison was born in Great Lakes, Illinois on March 22, 1958, to Wilton R. Madison and Lovelean Smith- Madison. He spent his childhood in Tidewater, Virginia. After their divorce, he moved to Baltimore with his father where he graduated in 1976 from Northwestern High School where he studied visual and performing arts.

Once his father discovered he was gay, he disowned Dale and the two didn't speak for nearly a decade. His dreams of going to college were halted by the estranged relationship and Madison didn't attend college until thirty years later, where he graduated with a master's degree in education from Antioch University.

Career[edit]

In 1991, Madison moved to Westchester, Pennsylvania after a nationwide search for hosts on the QVC network. Madison was hired as the first African American and the first male host on their newly launched fashion channel. While there he created and hosted the networks first African themed shopping show called Destination: Africa. On the show, he sold African themed products such as Kente cloth clothing, soapstone statues and handmade wooden carvings. During Madison's tenure at the network, African American viewership increased by more than 300%. His popularity grew as he interviewed celebrities such as Susan Lucci, George Hamilton, and Joan Rivers.[1]

In 2018, he created and starred in the Docu-comedy film, 'Life After QVC'. The film premiered at the 26th annual Independent Filmmakers Showcase (IFS) Film Festival later that year. The film chronicles Madison's rise as a popular host on the new shopping network in the early 1990s to the unexpected turn of paying the bills as a drag queen named FREEda SLAVE.

Personal life[edit]

Madison is openly gay and lives in Los Angeles California with his partner of five years.
