Dalhousie University Wine Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Dalhousie University Wine Society was founded in 2007 as a social and educational campus club at Dalhousie University. It offers the university's students and staff with a range of events, e.g. wine tastings, formal dinners with wine pairings and informal socials. The Society is currently chaired by 2nd Chairman Laurent Brisbois, subject to the de jure (though yet to be exercised) discretion of the Earl of Dalhousie. It maintains an official website at: http://www.dalwinesociety.com

History[edit]

The wine society was created in the summer of 2007 by then students Mr. Demers and Dr. Aleksis, ratified by the newly appointed executive board, its constitution then being approved by the Dalhousie University Student Union. Between 2007 and 2010, the society hosted events at the Dalhousie University Club, such as formal dinners and tastings, as well as at wine stores Bishop's Cellar and Premier Wine & Spirits. These events featured sommeliers who trained members in the lore and beauty of wine harvesting, aging, trade and consumption. Minutes of meetings and promotional materials were formerly hosted on the Society's website.

In 2010, Mr. Brisbois was appointed Demers' successor and he continues to exercise all rights and privileges afforded by the Society's constitution. The Society's events and meetings are no longer publicly advertised.

Events[edit]

The Society hosts formal and informal events throughout the year, including the annual black tie gala. These events have been hosted in heritage listed private residences and historic buildings, such as the Dalhousie University Club and a former medical fraternity on the corner of South Street and Robie Street, directly across from the IWK Health Centre.

Media[edit]

The activities of the Society have been covered by the student run The Dalhousie Gazette[1][2] and university run Dal News.[3][4] Unfortunately during the Gazette's modernisation of its website, many archived articles about the Society have been lost while others survived, though records are still maintained by the Society's archivist.

One included commentary about the 2010 student union election in which the Society publicly endorsed candidate Mr. Welch, a member of the Schulich School of Law, under the heading "Grape heavyweight Welch buys Wine Society vote!" The article was a humour piece, which implied that Mr. Welch was affiliated with Welch's and had applied unwarranted pressure on the Society for his endorsement, notwithstanding the company's lack of involvement in the wine industry and indeed its use as an alcohol free substitute for wine at ceremonies.
