Damian Corless is an Irish author, playwright and scriptwriter. He has written several works covering Irish history and culture.[1]

Corless was MTV's first Irish correspondent.[2] He was editor of the culture guide In Dublin before becoming managing editor of the monthly current affairs magazine Magill.[3] He wrote TV comedy sketches for the BBC series Big Train and RTÉ series Stew.[4]

From 2001 to 2019, he was a columnist and feature writer with Independent News & Media, initially with the Herald before moving to the Irish Independent.[citation needed] A 2003 article by Corless, published in the Irish Independent, was mentioned in a Seanad discussion in May 2003.[5] The author of a study of Ireland's climate since the first settlers arrived,[citation needed] he has delivered guest talks on the weather including to Roscommon's annual Percy French Festival,[6] Irish Meteorological Society,[citation needed] and the annual Bloom Horticultural Festival.[7]

His book on the history of Ireland's "love affair with confectionary", You'll Ruin Your Dinner, provided source material for a collaboration between the National College Of Art & Design's MA course in Design History and Material Culture and The Little Museum of Dublin, which yielded an exhibition and accompanying publication entitled The Secret Lives Of Objects - Hidden Histories Of Dublin Design.[8][not in citation given] Corless appeared as a commentator in each instalment of RTE1's 2022 history TV series "The Way We Were".[9] Corless has contributed to a number of radio programs on RTÉ and Newstalk.[10][11]

His stage comedy 'Death Wish '16 - The GPO' debuted at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival in 2015 with Ardal O'Hanlon as Padraig Pearse and Fred MacAuley as James Connolly.[12][13] In 2019, Corless was shortlisted for an An Post Book Of The Year Award, alongside singer Christy Dignam, for his work on Dignam's memoir My Crazy World published by Simon & Schuster.[14] In May 2024 Mirror Books UK published Corless'es social history of Ireland as a tax haven for British pop stars, 'Tax, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll'[15][16]
