Overview[edit]
Dan Li is a well known and respected British film, television, and voice actor. He is best known for playing a pivotal role in the Black Mirror episode, White Christmas. He first worked in a supporting role of Laizi in the 1993 acclaimed film, Farewell My Concubine. He has since provided voicework for The Angry Birds Movie 2 and video games such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. Li has also had numerous roles including in Doctor Who[1], 24: Live Another Day, Ideal, Casualty[2], Hotel Babylon, 4Funnies, Secret Diary of a Call Girl[3], Silent Witness, Black Mirror[4], and Comedy Lab[5].[6]
Farewell my Concubine (in which Li was credited as "Li Dan") went on to win Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and went on to win other honors. This role, though small, was important for Li as it provided exposure that launched future acting opportunities.
Early Life[edit]
Li is a British actor of Chinese descent. Chonan Chew of Resonate, Global Voices on East Asian Issues, reported that Li is important to the Asian community as Asian actors usually remain unseen with little known about them. "As East Asians are rarely seen on British television, seeing an East Asian actor cast in such a mainstream television show in a role that wasn’t a takeaway owner or stereotype, was refreshing to say the least."[7]
