Early life and education
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Turrentine is the son of J. Drake Turrentine, a Yale-trained lawyer and former partner at Wiggin & Dana who became chief legal officer for Special Olympics in Washington, D.C.[1] His mother, Joann Butrico Turrentine, is a preschool teacher and floral designer.[1] He has two sisters.[1] Turrentine attended Fairfield College Preparatory School, graduating in 1996. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Lafayette College in 2000.[1][2] He has maintained professional ties with the college, hosting externs at his workplaces.[2]
Career
Turrentine started as a political operative focused on fundraising and campaign management. He served as regional finance director for the Democratic National Committee, optimizing donor outreach and fundraising results from 2002 to 2004.[3] He later became national finance director for Senator Hillary Clinton’s re-election campaign and HILL PAC, orchestrating event fundraising and major donor engagement from 2004 to 2006.[1][3] From 2007 to 2010, he ran Churchill Road Group, a consulting firm advising senators, governors, and major advocacy organizations on campaign finance and strategy.[3] From 2010 to 2014, he served as Vice President for Government Relations at Technet, representing the technology sector on regulatory issues and federal legislative strategy.[3] He became chief of staff to Congressman Jared Polis (Colorado) in 2014, overseeing legislative strategy, constituent affairs, communications, and office operations.[4] From 2015, he joined H&R Block, eventually serving as Vice President and Chief Government Relations Officer, where he led public affairs strategy, government relations, advocacy, and policy compliance at state and federal levels.[4][3][5] In 2024, Turrentine began co-hosting The Morning Meeting on 2WAY Network, joining Mark Halperin and Sean Spicer in providing bipartisan political analysis.[5]
Public commentary and media profile
In 2025, Turrentine emerged as a prominent media commentator with a centrist Democratic perspective. He criticized the Democratic response to President Trump's 2025 joint congressional address, labeling the lack of bipartisan recognition "a classless disgrace" that undermined effective governance.[6] In June 2025, he condemned his party’s calls for impeachment over U.S. military actions against Iran and called for unity and constructive dialogue.[7] At the Democratic National Committee summer meeting, Turrentine warned that continued reliance on anti-Trump messaging amounted to "the definition of insanity," pointing to declining Democratic voter registration and advocating a renewed policy agenda.[8] He has publicly criticized anti-police rhetoric in municipal campaigns, warning such moves risk alienating moderates.[9]
Personal life
Turrentine married Colleen McCarthy, a former aide to New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, in Washington, D.C. in 2006.[1] They have one son and divorced in 2015.[1] He remarried in 2021. Turrentine resides in New York City with his wife Celeste Mellet and their four children.[5]
