Dane White is an American politician and businessman, who currently serves as Mayor of Escondido, California. He previously served on the Board of the Escondido Union High School District from 2016 to 2022. He is a Republican[1] and the youngest person ever elected Mayor in the City of Escondido.[2]
Early Life
Dane White is a fifth-generation Escondido resident and attended local schools, including Escondido High School and Escondido Charter High School.[3] In his early life, White experienced homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and the foster care system.[4] After overcoming those obstacles, White started his own business, providing finished flooring services to residential and commercial customers in San Diego County.[5]
Elected Office
Dane White was elected to the Escondido Union High School District Board of Trustees in 2016 and focused on improving trade and vocational education, fiscal responsibility, improving school facilities, and balancing the district's budget.[5]
As Mayor, White was appointed to serve as the Escondido representative on several regional governing bodies, including the boards of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG)[6], the North County Transit District[7], and the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission[8]. In his position as a SANDAG board member, White has been vocal about his opposition to the mileage tax proposal intended to fund the $163 Billion Regional Transportation Plan.[9][10]
White has made tackling homelessness his major priority as Mayor.[11] Early in his term, the council approved a new low-barrier shelter for families experiencing homelessness[12] and established an ad hoc committee to develop a plan for emergency action on homelessness.[13]
White has also been supportive of new housing development, voting to approve a major housing project in Northern Escondido.[14]
