Dr. Daniel Alva Griffith is an American geographer, spatial statistician, and GIScientist known for his work in quantitative geography, spatial statistics, and geospatial information sciences, and best recognized for developing the Moran eigenvector spatial filtering (MESF[1]) technique and introducing the sui- random variables model, both advanced spatial statistical approaches.[2] [3] [4] These conceptualizations address spatial autocorrelation (i.e., the tendency for nearby attribute values to be more similar or dissimilar than expected by chance alone) in regression modeling and have applications in spatial statistics, geography, economics, other social sciences, epidemiology, and the environmental sciences.[5][6]
Griffith is Ashbel Smith Professor Emeritus of Geospatial Information Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas.[7] Since 2021/22, two annual bibliometric rankings have placed him in the 99.95th percentile of global scholars, with one ranking him as the top spatial analyst worldwide.[8][9]
Early life and education
Griffith was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 15, 1948,[10] and, the second-oldest of eight siblings, was raised on a small truck farm in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He respectively earned his bachelor's and master’s degrees in mathematics-education and geography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, followed by graduate studies at the University of Toronto to earn a Ph.D. in geography, and then at the Pennsylvania State University to earn an M.S. in statistics.[11]
Academic career
Griffith has held faculty positions at Toronto Metropolitan University, University at Buffalo, Syracuse University, University of Miami, and the University of Texas at Dallas. He also has held courtesy appointments at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY/ESF), the University of Alberta, and the University of Central Florida, as well as visiting appointments at institutions including the University of Cambridge, the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, and Wuhan University. In addition, he served as editor of Geographical Analysis[12][13], and has been an associate/specialty editor or editorial board member for numerous professional journals[14][15][16].
Research and software contributions
Griffith's contributions to spatial statistics, including the development of MESF, have been recognized by an interdisciplinary set of peers, organizations, and institutions, as evidenced by his election as a fellow of various associations. Reflecting the cross-disciplinary nature of both geography and spatial statistics, Griffith is a fellow of several organizations, including the:
- Royal Society of Canada — (2017) in recognition of a profound influence on spatial statistics and geographic analysis, including widespread adoption of MESF methods and frequent collaboration with Canadian researchers, through publications and visiting engagements[20]
- Guggenheim Foundation — (2001) in recognition of innovative research in spatial statistics and geographic analysis, particularly for advancing quantitative methods in human geography[21]
- American Statistical Association — (2015) in recognition of significant contributions to spatial statistics, including the development of MESF and its application across the geographic and environmental sciences[22]
- American Association for the Advancement of Science — (2011) in recognition of distinguished contributions to spatial statistics and quantitative geography, particularly the development of MESF in a way that facilitates its broad interdisciplinary utilization[23]
- Regional Science Association International — (2009) in recognition of outstanding scholarly contributions to regional science, particularly in the subfield of spatial econometrics, as well as the development of spatial statistical methods used in regional analysis[24]
- American Association of Geographers — (2019) in recognition of sustained and distinguished contributions to the advancement of geography, particularly in the areas of spatial statistics and quantitative methods[25]
He also received the Jean Paelinck Award (RSAI)[26], the Walter Isard Award (NARSC)[27], the Internation Spatial Accuracy Research Association (ISARA) Peter Burrough Medal, and multiple Fulbright appointments[28][29]. In addition to these honors, Griffith is a fellow of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS)[30], the Spatial Econometrics Association (SEA)[31], and the New York Academy of Sciences. He received the ISARA Founder’s Medal[32], the AAG Nystrom Dissertation Award[33], research/scholarship awards from the AAG[34] and the UCGIS[35], and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award[36], too.
