Daniel Damiano is a playwright, screenwriter, actor, poet and novelist, born in Point Pleasant, NJ and currently living in New York City. He is also the co-founder/artistic director of fandango 4 Art House,[1] an off-off Broadway theatre and arts company focusing on new work, which he co-founded with his wife, Judy Alvarez.

Playwriting/screenwriting[edit]

Notable productions of his plays include The Lepers (Ensemble Studio Theatre, NYC, 2019), Harmony Park (Detroit Repertory Theatre, 2018),[2] The Dishonorable Discharge of Private Pitts (fandango 4 Art House/IATI Theatre, NYC, 2015),[3] Day of the Dog (59E59, NYC & the Gaslight Theatre, St. Louis, MO – both produced by St. Louis Actors’ Studio, 2013/14),[4] The Golden Year (WorkShop Theater, NYC, 2013)[5] and Dreams of Friendly Aliens (Abingdon Theatre Company, NYC, 2007).[6]

His acclaimed[7] solo play American Tranquility, which he also performed, premiered at the PIT Loft in NYC in 2017 and was performed subsequently in various venues in NYC (notably as part of the 16th Annual Downtown Urban Arts Festival in 2018 and two separate engagements at the East Village Playhouse in 2018 and 2019). It had its Washington DC premier in 2019 as part of the Capital Fringe Festival.[8][9]

His one-act play, The Lepers, was made into a film which he adapted for the screen, and premiered in the 2020 Queens World Film Festival (Best Production of Narrative Short Winner/Best Screenplay Nominee) and the 2020 Art of Brooklyn Festival. Directed by JD Ganz and featuring Eric Percival and Valerie Terranova.[10]

His poetry has thus far been published in Crooked Teeth Literary Magazine, Cloudbank, Newtown Literary Journal, New Voices Anthology 2016 and HotMetal Press. He was a 2013 Nominee for the Pushcart Poetry Prize.

Published work[edit]

In 2018, his acclaimed play Day of the Dog was published by Broadway Play Publishing.[12]

In 2021, fandango 4 Art House published his debut novel, The Woman in the Sun Hat,[13] and will be publishing a forthcoming collection of his poetry, 104 Days of the Pandemic, consisting of poems written between March 19th through June 30th, 2020.

His short story, The Gift of What For, is included in the Palm Circle Press Short Story Anthology, 2021, published by Palm Circle Press.[14]

A monologue from his play Harmony Park is included in The Best Men's Monologues from New Plays, 2019, published by Applause Books.[15]

Monologues from his plays Day of the Dog and Kim Kardashian Presents Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths is included in The Best Women's Monologues from New Plays, 2019, published by Applause Books.[16]

Acting[edit]

Notable stage performances include the title role in Richard Barbour and Reinaldo Povod’s Super Fishbowl Sunday (Kraine Theatre, NYC), multiple roles in the acclaimed 2007 Off-Broadway revival of Gilles Segal’s The Puppetmaster of Lodz (Blue Heron Theatre, NYC),[17] Damis in Moliere’s Tartuffe and originating the role of Frank in Ken Jaworwoski’s Interchange (both at the WorkShop Theater, NYC), Ira Stone in SchoolHouse Theatre’s production of Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor, as well as his acclaimed solo shows The Hyenas Got It Down (MITF Nominee, Best Actor) and American Tranquility. He has earned additional acclaim in a variety of roles for revivals or premiers of: Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man, Moises Kaufman’s The Laramie Project, Jennie Contuzzi-Trigo’s Body Language, Warren Leight’s Side Man, and Scott Sickles’ Perfecting the Kiss, among many others.

Also an acclaimed voice actor, he is known to some podcast enthusiasts as the voice of Dr. Max Finlayson in the acclaimed series Limetown.[18] He has also appeared in "Voices of the Revolution" and "Heart in a Net", among various other voice projects.

He will soon be featured in Rodney Ferrer's feature House of Waltz, which goes into production in June 2021, produced by Sidewalk Prophecy Films.

Music[edit]

In 2020, Damiano composed and produced his independently released solo album, Songs my Cat Likes, consisting of acoustic folk, instrumental and blues inspired acoustic guitar music.[19]
