Daniel Dugan[edit]

Biography & artistic practice[edit]

Daniel Dugan (b. November 9th, 1978) is an American contemporary artist and actor of Cuban descent whose work focuses on his life-long exploration of a uniformly spaced single line that never intersects. His work traverses a variety of media such as painting, sculpture, and fashion - all of which are bridged through the ritual of illustrating the continuous line. Over the last 30 years, Dugan has constructed a body of work exploring the diverse capacities of the one continuous line with ink, acrylic, oil, watercolor, wire, wood, steel, LED lighting, and more.

Dugan was raised in Alabama, initially following a fascination with anatomy, he received an Honours Degree in Biology and Spanish as a pre-med student at The University of Alabama. While living in Miami he turned to the performing arts to get in touch with his Cuban roots. Acting led him to live in New York and eventually be based out of Los Angeles. Throughout his acting career he never stopped his creative practice with the line. Organically, his focus and time shifted to solely exploring his “one continuous line”.

Daniel Dugan's work is a meditation and creative expression of his personal philosophies which are accessible to all inspired by, and interested in, the human condition. His line is a masterful puzzle, evoking the notion that the journey is the most important part of any destination. This narrative of micro and macro cosmic realities is often referred to in Dugan’s work - from Brain coral to the constructions of cellular organisms. Each work has a beginning and an ending, tracking his stream of consciousness in the moment. His signature style represents the flow of life and the unexpected events and emotions that unfold along the way - each adding value and balance. It is a reminder that we cannot control our path, but we can rather surrender to it and accept life as it unfolds. With each work, Dugan practices the concept of not knowing and being present.

Interior Design[edit]

Dugan has engaged with the world of luxury interiors through his cushion designs, wall paper, and rugs. Through doing this he has brought his fine art into the more domestic sphere of design. His “line” allows for such seamless translation into a variety of materials, permitting Dugan to work in territories of often explorative commissions, challenging him to take the line where it has not yet been.
