Daniel Gwyther (born 29 March 1986) is an English College soccer coach who has been the head soccer coach at SUNY Maritime since 2014.[1] Maritime compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division III (D-III) level as a member of Skyline Conference. He is also a Player/Coach for the Long Island Rough Riders[2] in the PDL.

Playing career[edit]

Early career[edit]

As a youth Gwyther attended Fulham's school of excellence. After leaving high school Gwyther began his career at Barnet representing their under 19's from 2002-2004. In summer 2004 he signed professionally,[3] and was named to the first team squad for the opening game of the 2004/05 season against Farnborough as an 18-year-old.[4] Drawing considerable attention, Watford subsequently signed him[5][6] for the remainder of the campaign.[7][8] At the conclusion of the 2004/05 season Gwyther was released and rejoined Barnet for their 2005/06 preseason preparations.[9] However, after receiving an offer from John Astudillo, the head coach of the State University of New York at Buffalo, Gwyther opted to head across the Atlantic to continue his career.

United States[edit]

Gwyther played for the Buffalo Bulls from 2005-2009, leading the team to their most successful 4-year period in school history. In his four-year career, Gwyther was a 2-year captain and played in 75 games, starting all but one, scoring seven goals and six assists. During this time the Bulls enjoyed their first National Ranking[10] and made it to the Mid-American Conference tournament finals in 2005 and 2007. He finished the 2008 campaign second on the team in scoring with 11 points, netting four goals and three assists in 20 games. For his efforts on the field Gwyther was twice named to the All-MAC regular season and All-MAC tournament teams.[11][12][13] After exhausting his playing eligibility Gwyther entered into the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.[14] and was invited to train with D.C. United[15] of Major League Soccer.

Return to the UK[edit]

After graduating with his degree Gwyther returned to the U.K and undertook his Masters at the University of Cambridge where he played for the University's football team[16] under Che Wilson. He earned full Blue honours by playing in the 2010 Varsity match[17] against Oxford University A.F.C. at Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium.[18]. After leaving Cambridge, Gwyther was signed by the Metropolitan Police F.C. for the 2010/11 season[19] and was part of the squad that won the Isthmian Division One South.[20] He re-signed for the club for the 2011/12 season for their first season in the Isthmian Premier Division, scoring his first goal for the club against Concord Rangers.[21]

Long Island Rough Riders[edit]

After the conclusion of the English season, Gwyther returned to the U.S and signed with the Long Island Rough Riders. During his seven seasons with the Rough Riders the club has secured four U.S. Open Cup births and several postseason appearances, including one Mid-Atlantic Conference title, two East Coast Championships and one Final Four.[22]

New York Greek Americans[edit]

Due to the nature of the American system Gwyther signed with the New York Greek Americans during the PDL offseason, leading the club to three ENYSSA League Cups, two New York State Cups, back to back U.S National Cup Final Appearances in 2012 and 2013 as well as qualifying for two U.S Open Cups.[23] He scored his first goal for the club against the Hicksville All-Stars in the 2nd round of the U.S National Cup.[24] In 2014 the Greek Americans reached their 3rd round of the 2014 U.S Open cup before falling to Richmond Kickers.[25] For the third straight year the club qualified for the U.S National Cup Final Four after beating Maryland Bays in the Eastern Region Final.[26] The club would go on to win the National Cup for the first time in their history after securing a 4-2 victory.[27][28]

New York Athletic Club[edit]

After three years with Atlas,[29] Gwyther signed with perennial National Premier Soccer League power New York Athletic Club.[30]

New York Greek Americans[edit]

In 2017 Gwyther along with five other former players resigned with the club.[31] The team captured its ninth CSL Premier League title after overcoming their arch rivals New York Freedoms in the final at Belson Stadium[32].

Coaching career[edit]

In July 2013, Gwyther was named the assistant coach for the SUNY Maritime men's soccer team.[33] In July 2014 Gwyther took over as the Head coach of Maritime.[34] After a successful first season, Gwyther was linked with the St. Bonaventure University head coaching position.[35] In 2017 he served as the Assistant Coach for the Eastern New York Olympic Development program.
