Dr. Daniel J. Phelan has served as president and chief executive officer of Jackson College since early 2001.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Dr. Phelan grew up on a farm in Iowa. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. He earned a Master of Business Administration Degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He earned both his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa.

Career[edit]

Previously, Dr. Phelan served as the president of Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa. Prior to SCC, President Phelan served as the executive vice president of educational and student services at Western Nebraska Community College, and as executive director of the Business & Industry Institute at Johnson County Community College, Kansas. He also served in numerous administrative posts including economic development, continuing education, off-campus centers, library and industry training at North Iowa Area Community College. He began is higher education career at Mount St. Clare College serving as a Development Officer and then as Director of Admissions.

Professional Involvement[edit]

Phelan is a member of the board of the American Council of Education (ACE).[1] He is also a board member for the League for Innovation in the Community College, having led the College to League Board status in 2019.[2] Phelan is also the past-chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).[3]

Elsewhere at the national level, Phelan serves as a board chairman for the Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE). He is also member of the Board of Directors for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK).[4]
