Daniel Maia (b. Lisbon, 1978) is a multi-awarded Portuguese comics artist and indie publisher, with an international career of several decades. He is also known for his work as an advertising illustrator, art director, comics historian and investigator, teacher, exhibitions organizer, and promoter of new talents.
Maia was the first Portuguese artist[1] to publish in the North-American comics’ market, in 2001, in the 'Artists Spotlight' section of magazine Previews #8, by Diamond Comics, and later, in 2008, was selected as the only Portuguese artist[2] among the twelve international original winners of the ChesterQuest: Worldwide Talent Hunt[3] initiative[4], conducted by Marvel Comics.
He remains an active creator of graphic novels in the European market and penciller of comic-books in the USA industry, having worked for publishers such as Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, HarperCollins, Another Door Comics[5], Ala dos Livros[6], and others.
From 2024 to 2026, Maia was the artist on the horror/action trilogy Apparition: Metempsychosis[7], for publisher Another Door Comics, by creator Tom Marvelli, also with contributions to their title The Boy in the Bot[8]. In 2026, he began working[9] for Image Comics in an as of yet undisclosed title.
Awards
Daniel Maia took his first steps in the field by winning an illustration contest, promoted by store 9ª Arte and magazine Art Nove, plus a comics contest promoted by store BDmania and event FIBDA, taking the 2nd place and the Critics’ Choice Award for Revelation Artist, both in 1995.
He also won the 2008’ 1st ChesterQuest: Worldwide Talent Hunt[10], conducted by former Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, C. B. Cebulski, which selected twelve winners from all over the world.
Maia has won several Central Comics Trophies[11], the only comics' merit award in Portugal attributed by the general public; namely, for Best Portuguese Artist (2006[12]), Best Independent Publication (2010[13], 2026[14]), Best Short Comic (2018[15]), Best Comics Anthology (2024[16], 2026[14]), and the 2nd Central Comics Trophies: Heroes of the Decade – Best Short Comic of the Decade (2024[17]). Additionally, with colleague of TágIIde group, he won the 6th Bandas Desenhadas Awards' for Best Anthology (2024[18]).
Although not an award per se, his graphic novel with writer Marco Calhorda, CoBrA: Operação Goa[19] (2022), was elected[20] in 2024 into the Ler+ initiative from Portugal's Ministry of Culture.
