Daniel Mazzone (born 1980) is a Canadian artist based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who is widely known for his complex mosaic portraits.[1] He has been referred to by some as this generation's Andy Warhol with his Pop art influences.[2]

Early life

Daniel Mazzone was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mazzone's mother was an art instructor and encouraged her son to express his artistic abilities from a young age. Daniel took a particular interest in the practice of making stained glass, which he still attributes as an influence for his mosaic style. The Mazzone's family and friends took notice of Daniel's artistic ability and potential, and encouraged him to continue his exploration and expression in various artistic forms. However, Mazzone's youthful artistic expression would be cut short as he went on to face homelessness at the age of 15.[3] Mazzone attributes his stint of homelessness to a major falling out with his mother. He would spend the next 5 years homeless, sometimes sleeping in parks around the city.[2]

Career

Initially, Mazzone got a job at a bank but did not enjoy his time.[4] To combat the monotony of his 9-to-5 lifestyle, Mazzone began practicing art for enjoyment.

Mazzone would wind up creating his first “professional” art piece without even realizing it. After the piece's completion, a friend of Mazzone's begged him to let him hang the work of art in his restaurant. Mazzone reluctantly agreed, but only on the stipulation that the piece would not be for sale. Mazzone's friend wound up going back on his promise after a customer inquired about the artwork and offered to purchase it for $14,000. This experience would give Mazzone the realization that he could become a full-time professional artist.[5]

Mazzone first achieved recognition for his artistic abilities in 2013 when he began exhibiting at the Canadian Heritage Company, and the Hazelton Fine Art Gallery.[6] He would continue his growth from this point and be given the spotlight at the International Art Fair in 2014, where the renowned Tanenbaum Family would add some of Mazzone's pieces to their art collection.[7]

In May 2015, Mazzone conducted his first show, “Torn Apart”, in New York City at the Carriage House arts Center.[8] He would follow this up in December at Art Basel, where he sold out his entire 25-piece collection at the show.[9] Some notable buyers at the show included Francois-Henry Bennahmias, Randy Frankel, and Jose Bautista.[10]

Mazzone has continued to appear at Art Basel, and in 2019 he had one of his largest showings with his show Life is a Circus. The show would debut his 6-foot tall sculpture character named YUME.[11]

In 2019, Mazzone was commissioned to create a 62-foot long by 10-foot wide art piece for Pearson International Airport’s Terminal One.[12] To complete it, Mazzone travelled to 12 different countries to collect different textile samples to use.[12] The final form of the project, called Children are the Future, was finished with textiles mounted on metal and covered with an acrylic finish.[13]
