Daniel Messé is an American composer, lyricist, singer-songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the composer of Amélie and as the co-founder of the indie folk band Hem.[1][2]
Messé earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College and an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.[3]
Messé co-founded the indie folk band Hem with guitarist Gary Maurer.[4][2]
In 2009, Hem composed the score for Twelfth Night for The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production starring Anne Hathaway and Audra McDonald.[5][2]
Messé composed the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Nathan Tysen for Amélie, which premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre before opening on Broadway in 2017.[1][5]
The revised London production received three Olivier Award nominations, and the Original London Cast Recording was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.[6]
Messé received the Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre.[3][7]
He has also received the Jonathan Larson Grant, the ASCAP/Frederick Loewe Award, and the E.Y. "Yip" Harburg Fellowship.[6]
He has written four musicals for TheatreWorks USA with Mindi Dickstein.[2]
In 2023, it was announced that he was developing a musical adaptation of Prelude to a Kiss with Craig Lucas and Sean Hartley, along with the theatrical song cycle You Don't Know About Me Without You.[8]
