Daniel Noah

Daniel Noah (born July 9, 1972) is an American film producer, screenwriter, and director. He is a co-founder of the production company SpectreVision, where is he partnered with Elijah Wood and Lisa Whalen.[1] Noah has served as producer on numerous award-winning films including Mandy, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, The Greasy Strangler, and Color Out of Space. He wrote and directed Max Rose, the final starring vehicle for Jerry Lewis, which premiered in the official lineup of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

Early Life[edit]

Noah was born in Chicago, Illinois. His grandfather and aunt, Robert Loewy and Judy Roberts, were popular local jazz artists.[2] He holds a Bachelor's Degree from the Dramatic Writing Program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts[3], where he studied under screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr.

Career[edit]

Film[edit]

Noah wrote and directed the feature film Max Rose, based on the final years of his grandfather, Chicago jazz musician Robert Loewy.[4] The film starred entertainment legend Jerry Lewis, whom Noah convinced to step out of retirement for this final, lead performance.[4] Max Rose premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.[5]

Noah contributed to Believers for Warner Brothers Pictures. He wrote the independent features McCanick and Camino.

Noah co-founded the genre skewing production company SpectreVision with partners Elijah Wood and Josh C. Waller, where he currently serves as Partner and Head of Development. He has acted as a producer on 17 feature films[6], including titles such as Mandy, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Color Out of Space, The Greasy Strangler, Daniel Isn't Real, and Cooties.

Noah is an instructor at USC School of Cinematic Arts.[7]

Gaming[edit]

Noah served as Co-Writer and Co-Creative Director (along with Elijah Wood) of the video game, "Transference," released on all platforms by Ubisoft in 2018 for consoles and VR. "Transference" was nominated for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

Podcasts[edit]

Noah is the co-host of Visitations[8] With Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah, a podcast in which the hosts visit the homes of creators for intimate conversations about their lives and work.[9] Season one[10] guests include Guillermo del Toro, Taika Waititi, Mike Flanagan, John Landis, Ana Lily Amirpour, Flying Lotus, the Rodarte Sisters, and Panos Cosmatos.[11]

Film Scoring[edit]

Noah co-founded the music management company SpectreVision Music, where he worked with neo-classical and electronic composers transitioning into film scoring.[12] Notable clients included Jóhann Jóhannsson (Prisoners, Arrival, Mandy) Volker Bertelmann (The Boy, Lion), Pepijn Caudron (Cooties, The Party's Just Beginning) and Morgan Z. Whirledge (Max Rose, Bitch, Infinity Train). The company dissolved in 2018, but Noah continues to work closely on scores and soundtrack releases for SpectreVision films, most recently with Clark for Daniel Isn't Real, Umberto[13] for Archenemy, and Clarice Jensen for No Man of God.[14]

SpectreFest[edit]

Noah served as Creative Director and Lead Programmer of SpectreFest[15], a popular genre festival that ran for five years at Los Angeles' CineFamily, where he produced and hosted events with special guests including William Friedkin, Clive Barker, Ana Lily Amirpour, J.A. Bayona, Wes Craven, Joe Dante, Roger Corman, Tobe Hooper, John Landis, E. Elias Merhige, Kevin Smith, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Leigh Whannell, Adam Wingard, and many others.[16]

Paranormal Advocacy[edit]

Noah is an outspoken advocate for the legitimacy of paranormal phenomena and psi research, appearing as a frequent guest on paranormal podcasts including Spooked[17] and Euphomet.[18]
