Daniel Scott Johnson (born February 24, 1979) is an American financial advisor, wealth management expert, and the founder of Windfall Advisors.[1]
Early life and education
Johnson was born in Belleville, Illinois.[2] He earned a Bachelor of General Studies from Southeast Missouri State University in 2002, where he was an Academic All-American in golf.[2] In 2013, he obtained the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) designation from the College for Financial Planning.[2] He completed executive education in investment strategies and macroeconomics at Columbia Business School in 2022 and became a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) from the Exit Planning Institute in 2023.[2][3]
Career
Johnson began his career as a commercial real estate broker and was recognized as "A Heavy Hitter" in the St. Louis Business Journal in 2006.[2] In 2008, he took on the role of vice president financial advisor at Merrill Lynch.[4][5] In 2016, he joined Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, where he was recognized as a rising star.[2]
In 2020, Johnson founded Windfall Advisors,a fee-only fiduciary and registered investment advisor (RIA) firm specializing in managing sudden wealth assets.[6][7][8] The firm provides investment management, financial consulting, financial planning, and estate planning services for individuals experiencing financial windfall events.[1] Under his leadership, the firm focuses on legacy wealth preservation, risk management, and tax-efficient investment strategies.[8]
Johnson served on the board of directors for both United Cerebral Palsy Wheels of LA Division and the Malibu Chamber of commerce.[4][9] He has been interviewed by CNN, CNBC and Forbes on topics related to wealth management and financial planning.[10][6][7][11][12] In 2023, Johnson provided financial advice for lottery winners following the $2.04 billion Mega Millions jackpot.[7]
He is also the author of Windfall Advisors “quick tips”, a financial publication by Windfall Advisors that offers guidance on managing sudden wealth.[13]
Recognition
Windfall Advisors has been listed among top financial advisory firms in LA, California.[14] In 2025, Johnson received the "Outstanding Contribution to Wealth Management Thought Leadership" award at the Miami Family Wealth Report Awards.[15][16][17][18]
