Daniel de Moivre

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Daniel de Moivre was a 17th-century French surgeon best known as the father of the mathematician Abraham de Moivre (1667–1754), one of the early pioneers in probability theory and complex analysis.[1]

Biography

Daniel de Moivre lived in the town of Vitry-le-François in the Champagne region of France.[2] He was a practicing surgeon and a member of the French Protestant (Huguenot) community.[3] The de Moivre family was part of the Reformed Church, which faced increasing persecution in the decades leading up to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

His son, Abraham, was born in 1667 and received a classical education in France before emigrating to England following the revocation, which led to widespread suppression of Protestant rights in France.[4] Though little is known about Daniel de Moivre’s own life and career, his profession and social status likely played a role in providing Abraham with the foundation for his studies in mathematics and philosophy.

Legacy

Daniel de Moivre is primarily remembered through historical references to his son, Abraham de Moivre, whose mathematical work had a lasting impact on the fields of probability, statistics, and complex numbers.[5]
