Sissi
- @Hoary:Thanks Hoary for your involvement! long story short, I translated this page from the italian wikipedia article i made in the first months of 2021. I'm interested in contemporary art but it's not my job, as i am an architect. Though, given my interest, at the time it was strange to me the lack of pages about living women artists in the italian wikipedia, and i started to work on my first page about Sissi, one of the most prominant artist of her generation (which is also my generation). It's not a paid work, and I tried to be very neutral, but of course you are right that the sentence highlighted below can be modified because of the emphasis. Please rephrase this, and other purple passages in this draft, in order not to impress its readers but to inform them. (The information may or may not impress them.) - About the photo, i asked an image of Daniela Olivieri directly to her gallery, after explaining them about the intended use. This because i understood that it's not possible to use copyrighted material, or upload something found on the internet. The art gallery send me via email this image made with a smartphone in their office and i uploaded it in wikipedia under my name. About the COI, i am happy to solve the issue writing this information somewhere in the document. Can you send me a link to the procedure? many thanks again for your help. Daniela Olivieri (born 19 June 1977), also known as Sissi, is an Italian artist. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where she graduated in painting in 2001. She was selected that same year by the Antonio Ratti Foundation to participate in the Advanced Course of Visual Arts, held in that year by Marina Abramović.[1] She lives in Bologna and teaches at the Bologna Academy of fine arts.
Activity
She began her artistic career in 1999 in an academic environment with the performance Daniela ha perso il treno[2][3], in the space of the station that was the site of a neo-fascist terrorist attack (L'Accademia in Stazione, Collaboration with the State Railways).[4]
Sissi's research is characterized by a pseudoscientific analysis of the human body and its emotions. Drawing from various humanistic and scientific disciplines such as archeology and anatomy [5][6] , the artist creates clothes, drawings, installations, performances, artist books, and sculptures through the use of the most varied materials (fabrics, natural and synthetic yarns, bamboo, ceramics, metals).
In 2009 she participated in the 53rd Venice Biennale with an installation entitled La deriva è il nodo della mia gola [7][8], made of a multitude of ceramic elements confined within an unsteady metal cage.
The artist returns to manipulating clay in 2016, for a large installation of ceramic elements defined as Servizio Osseo [9][9], which are at the center of the performance L'imbandita, presented in Bologna in the Oratory of San Filippo Neri.[10]
In more recent years, ceramics has become a favorite material of Sissi’s, being used in large installations such as Germogli Ossei [11][12][13] or in smaller elements, such as the Mornatura and Natura Viva vases[14][15] , tributes to Giorgio Morandi made in 2019-20.
Performances
The performative experiences of her first years of artistic activity see the artist creating nests or cocoons with hand knitting, plastics, and other materials. The vulcanized plastic skirt in Daniela ha perso il treno [3] started this ten-year trend.
Between 1999 and 2007 Sissi's practice is, in fact, characterized by performances that make use of the use of intertwining yarns[16][17] and colored plastic thread[18][19][20][21][22][23]. An important episode in this path is La di Piano[24][25] which won her the Furla Award for Art in 2002.
Over the following years her performances gradually free themselves from the strict need to surround themselves with these protective artefacts, to project themselves into a more expansive and social dimension, in which the artist stages lessons[5][6] or enters directly contact with the public as in the performance Vestimenti, in which she creates a garment first on herself and then on a spectator.[26]
In recent years, another strand of Sissi’s research in performance uses roller skates as a tool through which to simultaneously design the environmental space in which she moves and interacts with the audience.[27][28]
Artist’s Books
A favorite form of expression of Siss’s is the Artist Books, an example is Anatomia Parallela (limited edition of 5 copies)[29][30], within which a reinterpretation of human anatomy is theorized. The artist interprets this vision through drawings, collages, reflections, typewritten theories, and ancient typographic stamps.
Since 2011, Anatomia Parallela has also become a performance, and Sissi holds lessons in historic anatomical theaters in Italy and Europe during which she illustrates the tables that make up her books to the public[31][6]. Among the cities that have hosted Anatomia Parallela on Tour are Bologna, Rome [32],Padua, Mantua, Venice [33], Turin, London [34], Pistoia.
