Comment: In preparing this draft, I disclose that AI assistance was used as follows: Of course not! I didn't use AI! I just translated and converted the persian version into the english version, not more! But now I fount out just after sending it to draf list that it has used the chatgpt! I'm sorry! I have corrected it. PayamAvarwand (talk) 17:27, 9 October 2026 (UTC)

Dariush D. Farhoud (also spelled Farhud; Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; born 24 March 1938) is an Iranian physician and geneticist. He has been editor-in-chief of the Iranian Journal of Public Health since 1981[1] and was elected a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 1995.[2] Iranian media often call him the "father of Iranian genetics".[3][4]
Early life and education
Farhoud was born in Tehran in 1938.[5] He studied medicine at the University of Erlangen, graduating in 1969, and received a doctorate in human genetics and anthropology from the University of Mainz in 1972.[5]
Career
Farhoud returned to Iran in 1972 and joined the School of Public Health at the University of Tehran, where he worked in human genetics and anthropology.[5] In 1975 he founded a genetics clinic in Tehran.[5] His staff at the clinic were the ones who reported him missing in 2022.[4]
He became editor-in-chief of the Iranian Journal of Public Health, published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences since 1971, in 1981.[1] He still held the post in 2025.[6]
Research
According to his TWAS profile, Farhoud's work includes the description of a transferrin variant named "Tf Iran" in 1988 and a report of a multiple synostosis syndrome in an Iranian family in 1999.[5] In 2024 he and colleagues published clinical findings and exome sequencing results for a five-generation Iranian family with multiple synostoses syndrome type 2, which the paper calls the "Farhud type".[7] He has also written on ethical questions raised by artificial intelligence in healthcare.[8]
Public statements
In 2022 Farhoud criticised parliament's plans to restrict prenatal screening. In April that year he called the proposed ban an affront to human rights,[4] and in August he again warned of the importance of fetal screening.[3] He also expressed support for the Mahsa Amini protests.[4]
2022 abduction
On 30 October 2022, staff at Farhoud's clinic reported him missing. The next day he told the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) that two men had approached him outside his home, taken him to another location and questioned him for about 26 hours before releasing him.[9][4] According to Radio Farda, he said they had asked about his contacts and his criticism of the government.[4]
ISNA reported on 31 October that no security agency had arrested him.[10] On 3 November 2022, Tehran's criminal investigation police said the case was a kidnapping for extortion and that suspects had been arrested.[11]
