Darkside is a 2022 Canadian epic science fiction short film written and directed by Spencer Zimmerman and produced by Braiden Van Grootel[1]. The film premiered at the 15th anniversary of NFFTY in Seattle, WA. The production of the film was unusually long for a film of it's length, and marred by several challenges, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film won the award for Best Student Film and the 2022 Leo Awards.[2]

Plot[edit]

The story tracks Sam Bowman, an astronaut in the near future as he leads an interstellar search and rescue mission to find a crew lost in space while exploring Titan, one of Saturn's moons. The mission goes terribly wrong when the entire crew is killed with only Bowman remaining, and he laments on whether to finish the mission or return to Earth. He finally decides to descend to the surface of the planet, only to find that the crew has been long dead and his efforts have been in vain. After discovering this, he lays down on the alien surface, and slowly dies from a puncture wound sustained while crash landing on Titan. The story is told in a series of flashbacks to his life on earth, focused on his wife, Sarah Bowman, and child.[3]

Production[edit]

The production of the film took place primarily in Vancouver, BC, and took over 720 days to complete, beginning in late 2019 and finishing in early 2022.[4]

Zimmerman wrote the script while attending the Motion Picture Arts program at Capilano University in 2019. A crowdfunding campaign was launched shortly thereafter on Indiegogo to raise financing for the film, using a short 1 minute video as a proof of concept for investors.

Principal photography began on Friday, March 13th, but was was shut down only a few days later by public health orders arising from concern over the COVID-19 virus. Despite the films short run time, the crew had amassed a total of 12 hours of raw footage, which took several months to cut down to it's 12 minute final run time.[5] Models, live animals, and various practical effects were used in favour of traditional computer generated visual effects to create the world of the film because they “didn’t have a lot of understanding of CGI, so we built miniatures [...] out of pretty much garbage”.[6]

Accolades[edit]

The film has been generally well received, generating positive reviews and earning several awards:

Year Ceremony Award/Category Status
2022 NFFTY Audience Award Won
Special Achievement (VFX) Won
2022 Chattanooga Film Festival Best Student Short Film Nominated
2022 Leo Awards Best Student Production Won
