Darren Palmer (born November 4, 1977) is an influential Australian interior designer and television personality. Darren is recognised as a judge on Australian reality television series, The Block on the Nine Network (2011-present). Darren Palmer is also the name of a home product brand, available Australia-wide exclusively to department store Myer, delivering high quality design to homes.[1] 

Early life[edit]

Darren Palmer was born and raised in Gladstone, Central Queensland. From an early age Darren knew he wanted to create houses, and so after completing school at Gladstone State High, he graduated in a Certificate of Visual Arts (1995) and Graphic Design (1997) at TAFE in Central Queensland.[2]

DP Designed[edit]

Darren Palmer Designed (DP Designed) is an interior design service provided to homeowners, corporations, charities, architects and developers. Established in 2006, the goal of the DP Designed team is to work hand in hand with the clients, taking projects from briefs through to completion.[3]

Charity[edit]

In 2012, Darren Palmer was Ambassador for Young Care, a charity that focuses on bringing young people out of aged care and into more youthful and appropriate, high care living environments.[4]

In 2015 Darren Palmer commenced his partnership with Yourtown in their Christmas Prize Home initiative. Since 2015, Darren has been helping build Yourtown's largest and most valuable prize home of the year. The funds from the tickets sold in the Yourtown Christmas Prize Home provide assistance to young people at risk and in need through services such as counselling, job training, family support and Kids Helpline.[5]

Television[edit]

Darren Palmer’s television career began in 2009. During this time he has held a number of roles as a judge, presenter and contestant on popular home and lifestyle shows.

In 2009 Darren made his television debut as a runner-up contestant on interior design home renovation show homeMADE.[6] homeMADE was an Australian reality television series presented by David Heimann that aired on the Nine Network for just one season.[7]

Darren then joined Australian series The Block in season four and season five as a guest judge in 2011 and 2012.[8] It wasn’t until season six (2013) that he replaced John McGrath as one of the three permanent expert judges, featured alongside Neale Whitaker and Shaynna Blaze.

In 2015, Darren was featured as a judge alongside Romy Alwill on the first season of the Nine Network’s Reno Rumble, an Australian renovation reality television series. The first series was hosted by Scott Cam and season two saw Shelley Craft join the cast. Reno Rumble was on air for two consecutive seasons (2015 and 2016).[9]

Darren Palmer for Myer[edit]

In 2017 Darren Palmer partnered with Myer to launch an exclusive Darren Palmer homeware collection in 2017 to offer everyday luxury to homes all over Australia.[10] The Darren Palmer range includes cushions, bedlinen, decorative bed covers, bath towels, table ware, napery and hard home decor items.[11] Through this venture, Darren worked to translate his signature and luxurious style to make it accessible Australia-wide.[12] Myer’s store network offer his collection in approximately 50 stores nationally as well as online at myer.com.au.

Darren has also collaborated with a number of brands and companies. Some high-profile companies and brands that are not mentioned in the table below include Nespresso, Decoration+Design, Domayne, King Living and HIA (Housing Industry Association).

Carpet Court 2012-current Darren has been Brand Ambassador for Australia’s largest retail floor covering specialist Carpet Court since 2012. In 2013 he created his own affordable designer flooring and carpet range.[13]
MOPO 2014-2016 Darren Palmer designed, and was the face of multi-level residential apartment building MOPO.[14] The project's marketing, in which Darren was the face of, won SAVI Communications Good Design Award 2016: Communication Design Branding and Identity.[15]
Audi Australia 2016-current Darren became Audi Australia's first Design Ambassador in 2016. Audi Australia also got Darren to redesign the Audi Suite at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground).[16]
Häfele Australia 2017-current Darren became Brand Ambassador for Häfele Australia in 2017. Häfele is an international company that provides hardware and fitting systems and electronic locking systems.[17]
Mulberry/Art Group 2018-current In mid-2018 Darren was announced Interior Designer of the Mulberry (SOHO, Canberra) apartments for Canberra-based development company Art Group.[18]
LG Signature 2017-current Darren Palmer has been the Brand Ambassador for LG’s ultra premium range of appliances LG Signature since 2017.[19]
The Interior Design Institute 2018-current The Interior Design Institute, an advanced and comprehensive online solution to interior design learning, worked closely with Darren in 2018 to create MASTERSERIES. MASTERSERIES is an online interior design course containing Darren Palmer’s own theory, curated in 15 videos and an eBook to complement the content covered.[20]
G.J. Gardner Homes 2018-current 2018 saw Darren release the TAILORED Inspired Home Collection, a series of six different, Darren Palmer branded and designed homes available Australia wide, in collaboration with and exclusive to G.J. Gardner Homes.[21]

Personal life[edit]

Just six weeks after they met, Darren’s now husband Olivier Duvillard proposed and in 2011 they married in Cape Town, South Africa. Their marriage was officially recognised in Australia after the controversial postal survey, legalising same-sex marriage in December of 2017.[22] The couple renewed their wedding vowels shortly after in Byron Bay, amongst a small group of family and friends. Darren and Olivier’s family consists of their son and three dogs.[23]
