Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK)

The Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) is a collection of best practices and provides a common vernacular for managing data across an enterprise.

History and Versions of the Data Management Body of Knowledge

DMBOK was first published in 2015, and was authored by the Data Management Association, a non-profit organization created for the purpose of developing the profession of Data Management by education and certification using best practices. DMOK 2, the latest version, was published July 1, 2017.

The DMBOK is targeted at a variety of information/data professionals on both the technical and non-technical side, serving as an instrument for data literacy for data creators (knowledge workers) and data consumers (executives, managers, researchers, analysts, data scientists) and for the data management professionals that connect data creators to data consumers (IT managers, data engineers, business intelligence engineers, data visualization experts, and data scientists serving dual roles as creators and consumers). DMBOK places emphasis on the fact that technology by itself does not ensure good information delivery, it requires a strong partnership across the enterprise.

DMBOK also serves as a study reference for professional certification as a Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP).

DMBOK version 2

DMBOK 2 contains the same materials as the original DMBOK with a few changes to naming conventions, e.g. "Functional Areas" are now "Knowledge Areas", and the addition of more detail for each knowledge area. Data governance is recognized in this edition as being at the heart of and the connector between all knowledge areas. In comparing the chapters, effort has been made to further emphasize the role that data plays in organizational change, and presumably, digital business transformations and also to describe recommended roles and expectations for managing data across an enterprise.

New topics include "Data Integration and Interoperability" and cloud/big data has also gained attention.

Other topics have been rearranged including Ethics which has become a hot topic in the industry due to changing regulations around information privacy including GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.

DMBOK version 1

The intent of the first edition of DMBOK was to create an equivalent of the Project Managers Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Business Analysts Book of Knowledge (BABOK). While this version can also be used to study for the CDMP, it may not cover the newer topics including data integration/interoperability, cloud/big data, and ethics. CDMP exams often draw from inference across topics, e.g. you may need to know data governance, metadata, and data quality to pass the Data Quality exam.
