He works as a Technical Officer for VPD Surveillance with the World Health Organization (WHO) Inter-Country Support Team for East and Southern Africa, based in Harare, Zimbabwe.[1]
Education
Daudi Peter Manyanga holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Dar es Salaam (1997), a Master of Public Health from the University of Leeds (2004), a Master of Business Administration from Mzumbe University (2010), a Master of Arts in Monitoring and Evaluation from the Open University of Tanzania (2017), and a PhD in Monitoring and Evaluation from the Open University of Tanzania (2019).[2]
Career
Ministry of Health, Tanzania
Manyanga joined Tanzania's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as an EPI Surveillance Officer in 1999. He served as Acting National Immunization Programme Manager from 2002 to 2003, and later as National EPI Monitoring and Evaluation Officer from 2004 to 2016.[2]
World Health Organization
Since 2016, Manyanga has served in surveillance roles with WHO's Inter-Country Support Team for East and Southern Africa in Harare, Zimbabwe.[2] In 2024, he was a featured speaker at a South African government-hosted webinar on polio surveillance.[3]
In 2026, Manyanga was deployed by the WHO Regional Office for Africa to Lesotho to conduct a review and optimisation of the country's environmental surveillance sites for polio detection, with the aim of enhancing detection sensitivity for poliovirus.[1]
Research
Manyanga's research focuses on vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, polio eradication, acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) detection, and the integration of environmental surveillance for infectious diseases. He has published on polio surveillance in East and Southern Africa, including studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on AFP surveillance,[4] the use of outbreak simulation exercises to strengthen preparedness,[5] and the implementation of environmental surveillance for poliovirus detection.[6]
Manyanga co-authored several articles in the 2025 Pan African Medical Journal supplement commemorating fifty years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in East and Southern Africa.[7]
