Dave Brown is a columnist with the Ottawa Citizen. He retired in August 2003, after a 38-year career of writing daily columns about Canada's capital. He wrote more than 10,000 columns. In 2017, he continues to write a once-a-week column in the Citizen on Mondays.[1] In 2013 it was reported he was writing his column on a biweekly basis.[2]

He had written about questionable ethics the professions, the excesses of the child protection system, zero tolerance and the horrors of war through the eyes of veterans.

Brown has written more than 10,000 daily columns. His output over the years has passed the 7.5 million word mark. He won a National Newspaper Award for "best columnist" in Canada in 1993[2] and has won awards from Canadian Legion Dominion Command, and Veterans Affairs Canada. His books include Best of Brown - Window on Ottawa, published in 2003.[3] [4]

Early life[edit]

Brown was born in North Bay, Ontario and raised on Manitoulin Island.[5] He began writing for a high school newsletter at age 15, then a weekly Manitoulin newspaper after high school, then the Sudbury Daily Star in 1957. In 1960, he began with the Ottawa Journal, for which he began writing a column named "Below the Hill" in 1966. He began writing a column for the Ottawa Citizen in 1978.[2]
