He is the longest serving member of the backroom team[1] having coached/assisted over 500 first team games and achieved three promotions. He has worked under four different managers [1] (Alan Lord,[2][3] Jim Gannon, Simon Rusk,[4] Dave Challinor).
Dave [2] held the position of caretaker manager [3] List of Stockport County F.C. managers[5] on three occasions[6] firstly after Alan Lord stepped down,[3] secondly when Jim Gannon was dismissed[7][8] and for the third time when Simon Rusk was dismissed[9] before Dave Challinor took over.[10]
Before Dave was full-time at Stockport County he was a PE Teacher at Aquinas College[11] and coached Stockport County part-time.[12]
Coaching Background[edit]
Dave worked part-time at the club with Alan Lord after joining part way through the 2013/14 season and for the 2014/15 season before Alan stepped down and the club appointed a new manager.[13] Dave then joined Jim Gannon as assistant at Northwich Victoria FA for the 2015/16 season when they got to the FA Cup 2nd round and were defeated by Northampton Town [14][15][16]. Jim Gannon then returned to Stockport as manager in January 2016 and appointed Dave as his assistant manager. [17]
The club transitioned during this time to hybrid before going full time under the new ownership of Mark Stott[18] Stockport returned to full-time status for the season 2021-22 [19] After Jim was dismissed in January, Dave was the caretaker manger for the against Boreham Wood [20] before Simon Rusk [4] was appointed as manager (with Mark McGhee joining as joint assistant manager [21] the end of the 2020/2021 season saw Stockport lose in the National League playoff semi final. [22] The next season 2021/22 saw Rusk only last in his position as manager until October [23]. Conlon took temporary charge for the next game v Dover [24][25][26]. Dave Challinor was appointed in time for the FA Cup game v Bolton Wanderers [10]. This season the club gained promotion back to the football league as they were crowned National League champions 2021/22. [27][28]
County finished the next (2022/23) in fourth, missing out on automatic promotion on the final day, before going on to lose the League Two Play-Off final on penalties to Carlisle United at Wembley.[29][30]
