David Anthony Ware is an American murderer responsible for the shooting of two police officers in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 29, 2020 during a traffic stop at around 3:00 AM.

On June 29, 2020, officers Craig Johnson and Aurash Zarkeshan of the Oklahoma Police Department pulled over Ware for making an illegal left turn and failing to yield at a traffic stop. The officers later found out that Ware's registration tags were expired for over 60 days and he had felonies for selling illegal narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After about 17 minutes after the traffic stop, the officers had already told Ware over 40 times to step out of his car, but he refused to comply with the officers. The officers had tased and sprayed Ware numerous times so they could get him out of his car. As the officers attempted to get him out of his car, they failed to notice him reaching under his front seat for a pistol which he then began to fire after a brief struggle with the officers outside the vehicle. Police Sgt. Craig Johnson fell to the ground immediately after being shot at close range. Zarkeshan attempted to retreat from the shooter but Ware continued shooting and struck officer Zarkeshan in the head, critically injuring him. Ware then turned back to Johnson, who was still lying on the ground, and shot him in the head once more.[1][2]

Ware then fled the scene with his friend, 29-year-old Matthew Hall, whom he called during the argument and was waiting for him in a nearby vehicle. Both officers were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Zarkeshan survived the shooting in critical condition, but Johnson later died the next day after being taken off of life support.[3]

Aftermath

Ware's lawyer demanded the video of the shooting be released to the public because he feels the affidavit report made by the police made Ware seem cold and calculated. Hall was later charged with one count of accessory after shooting with intent to kill and one count of accessory after murder for helping Ware evade arrest after the fatal shooting of Johnson. Hall's defense, however, argued that Johnson was still alive when he was accused of helping Ware and was already in prison after Johnson died. The judge later reduced the accessory after murder charge down to a second charge of accessory after shooting with intent to kill. Hall's jury trial will take place on Monday, January 4, 2021, and he is pleading not guilty.[4]

28-year-old Jakob Garland is accused of giving Ware the firearm used in the shooting in exchange for heroin on June 19, 2020. Garland was later charged with possession of a firearm, furtherance of drug trafficking, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.[5]

Ware is being charged with first-degree murder in Johnson's death, shooting with intent to kill Zarkeshan, drug possession with the intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. Ware is now facing the death penalty for Johnson's death.[6]

Criminal History

In 2006, Ware was arrested for connection to a second-degree burglary.[7]

In 2008, Ware was arrested again for connection to a second-degree burglary.[7]

In 2017, Ware was once again arrested with connection to drug and burglary charges.[7]
