David August
David “August” Nattkemper (born July 7th 1990) is a German-Italian composer, producer and DJ currently based in Berlin, Germany. A graduate from the University of the Arts in Berlin...[1][2], following three album productions, August released Times [3] as his first official solo album in 2013 on Solomun’s record label Diynamic, following his debut EP Instant Harmony [4] and the 2 12” Peace Of Conscience [5] and You Got To Love Me [6] (all on Diynamic). [7]. In 2018, the release of the album DCXXXIX A.C. [8] marked the debut on his newly founded record label 99Chants, followed by D'ANGELO in the same year which was released on the label PIAS [9][10] [11][12].
August has collaborated with Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, with the Coro Polifonico Cittá Del Palestrina, as well as with other musicians, including Mark Wyand, Sissi Makropoulou and Ayse Cansu Tanrikulu. He is the son of German pianist Ralf Nattkemper. [13][14].
Early Life[edit]
August was born in Hamburg, Germany. His first approach to music happened at age 5 through the piano, focussing on classical repertoire [15][16]. His first teacher was Gisela Stumme, taught by Conrad Hansen. Subsequent teachers were Marian Migdal from 2009 to 2011 and Rolf Koenen from 2013 to 2017. At age 10 August explored his first compositions. [2][13].
Career[edit]
Years 2006 - 2014[edit]
In 2006 he was introduced to dance music through a school-friend, with whom he shared his first DJ experiences and eventually also explored his first productions [15]. From 2008 through 2014 his music production was predominantly club- oriented, inspired by the local scene and its most prominent artists [2]. In 2009 August became resident at Hamburg’s club EGO. The residency at the 300-capacity space devoted to a wide range of monthly programming marked a pathbreaking period for August's early career. Shortly after in 2010, August releases his Instant Harmony EP, consisting in a cinematic and melodic approach to the club scene. Several EPs followed as well as remixes, official and unofficial works [17][4]. In 2013 David August released his first album "Times", a first exploration in electronic songwriting with acoustic and electronic instrumentation and a detachment from playing traditional DJ gigs in favour of developing a new language. With Times, David adopted a different approach to shows, presenting for the first time his own music in a club environment with a live set [3][7]. It is during these more explorative years that he landed numerous official remixes for the likes of Max Cooper (2014), Stimming (2014) and The Acid (2015) [18]. In 2014 he released Epikur - his debut EP on the Berlin label Innervisions [19]. His debut for Boiler Room, a showcase of unofficial works that remains a signature of David’s live performances and a significant turning point in August's career also was broadcasted in 2014 [17]. Several appearances in annual polls followed with “4th-best live act of the year in the Resident Advisor annual poll” among them [13].
Years 2015 - 2017[edit]
In 2015 August continued exploring with Resident Advisor session’s live set, during which he built an improvised piece based on an interview of Alfred Hitchcock and his “Definition Of Happiness” [20]; It's in the same year that an encounter with Berlin-based Greek vocalist and harpist Sissi Rada would happen and the collaboration on the song “Patria” was released. Sissi Rada became part of a new live project “David August & Ensemble” together with Max Trieder (Guitar) and Marcel Braun (Drums) in the same year. A European tour followed with appearances at Volksbühne (Berlin), Melkweg (Amsterdam), Le Divan du Monde (Paris) among others [21]. In 2016 August debuts a collaborative project and broadcasted live performance X-Poème Symphonique with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin showcasing a 50-piece classical symphonic orchestra [22]. It's the artist's first contact in exploring a dialogue between classical instruments and electronic environment of that size. David would meet Mark Wyand who assisted on the Saxophone within the orchestra, who eventually becomes a collaborator for other live performances (Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg) and studio recordings (“The Life of Merisi” and “Dorian Space”)[13]. In the same year (2016) August releases two EPs - J.B.Y./Ouvert and The Spell - on Ninja Tunes’ sub-label Counter Records, marking a new dedication to sound design and different rhythmical structures [23][13][24]. The live summer tour across Europe (including a live band) and beyond to promote these two EPs included a praised by many sold-out headline show at Koko in London and a special live session for Red Bull Music Academy’s showcase series See.Hear.Now. where he performed live versions of his Counter catalogue [25][26][27]
Years 2018 - present[edit]
After taking a year break from the limelight in which he focused on graduating from university, David released his second album DCXXXIX A.C. (March 2018) accompanied by an hour-long video (filmed by August in Palestrina, birth-place of David's mother[13]) to launch his new record label 99CHANTS. DCXXXIX A.C. marks a turning point in aesthetic and concept. Ambient and drone in its core, August explores the visual and sonic work while aiming for a three-dimensional form of expression. “The piece is 60 min long and contains 24 tracks, which I see all linked together, forming one long breath. As my most recent work takes inspiration from my Italian provenience, so does this album. I go back in time, finding myself surrounded by the nature and ancient spirit of a small town in the middle of Italy – vision and sound to a time and space unknown” [17]. The label is a finite project aimed at releasing 99 “chants” (releases) from a selection of artists such as Ambienti Coassiali, Bunita Marcus, Giulio Aldinucci, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Louis Sterling and Ron Trent [28] In September 2018 David performed at Elbphilharmonie in his native city of Hamburg with guest appearances of Sissi Rada and Mark Wyand[28]. In the same year, August releases the successor, his third album D’Angelo, on PIAS (October 2018) [29][10]. The writing sessions began in 2016 in Florence and were concluded in 2018 in Berlin. August cooperates with the “Coro Polifonico Città del Palestrina” forming the foundation of the record [14]. (These recordings appear on every piece of D'Angelo). As with his predecessor DCXXXIX AC, with D’Angelo August dedicates his work to his provenience, inspired by Italian artists of the last centuries. Baroque painter Caravaggio and renaissance composer Pierluigi di Palestrina as the most significant inspirations, August mentions Fellini, Dante, Battisti and De André as essential references. Showcasing a variety of musical directions, from post-rock, techno and ambient, the album connects throughout a continuous cinematic aesthetic and experimental songwriting [17]. Visual collaborator on the album was Ascetic House label owner JS Aurelius, who contributed with the design and packaging of the record as previously on DCXXXIX A.C. [30]. To promote the album August embarked on an 85-date world tour bringing his performance to some of the most prominent venues and festivals including: The Roundhouse (London), Columbiahalle (Berlin), Le Trianon (Paris), Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), El Rey Theatre (Los Angeles), All Point East (UK), Club to Club (IT), Paradiso (NE), Down the Rabbit Hole (NE), Primavera Sound (ES), Montreaux Jazz Festival (CHE), Roskilde (DEN), Sziget Festival (HUN), III Points Festival (USA). Gigi Masin, Paquita Gordon, Louis Sterling and Neonlichter were supporting his solo tour in EU and USA [31]
In summer 2019 August broadcasts at Melt Festival (DE) The Life of Merisi, a cooperation with Argentinian artist and painter Francisco Bosoletti who contributed visually an interpretation of Caravaggio's work in his contemporary language using projections for the first time[32]. August radically deconstructs the material of D'Angelo and presents unreleased works, sampling Frescobaldi and Lucio Battisti as well.[33] Early 2020 August releases Reminiscence Of A Jewel, the sixth “chant” on his imprint 99CHANTS presenting a bold and progressive approach to club culture. Unofficial remixes include Pino Daniele, Hamlet Gonashvili, Pierluigi Da Palestrina, Rebekah Del Rio, Grizzly Bear, Mary Afi Usah, Syl Johnson, Fela Kuti and Ashford & Simpsons.
Education[edit]
Alongside developing his music career, David studied sound engineering at Berlin’s University of the Arts from 2011 to 2017.
