David Bennett Sr.

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

David Bennett Sr. is the first patient to undergo a xenotransplantation with a genetically modified heart. On January 7, 2022, aged 57, he received the heart of a gene-edited pig.[1]

Transplant[edit]

The transplant, performed by a team lead by cardiothoracic surgeon Bartley Griffith, M.D.[2] at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, replaced Bennett's heart with the heart of a genetically modified pig that had undergone specific gene editing to remove enzymes responsible for producing sugar antigens that lead to hyperacute organ rejection in humans. The patient was ineligible for a standard human heart transplant or a heart pump due to his health conditions with heart failure and an irregular heartbeat.[3] Bennett was granted FDA emergency authorization to receive the surgery under compassionate use criteria in a last-ditch effort to treat end-stage heart disease.[4][5]

The transplant was the first heart to be taken from a genetically modified pig. Another patient had a kidney transplant from a similar pig in October of 2021.[6]

1988 stabbing[edit]

Bennett was convicted of battery and carrying a concealed weapon for the April 30, 1988 stabbing of Edward Shumaker. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stabbing Shumaker repeatedly in the abdomen, chest and back after Bennett's then-wife Norma Jean Bennett sat on Shumaker's lap. The attack left Shumaker paralyzed and he spent the next 19 years in a wheelchair before having a stroke in 2005 and passing away two years later.[7]
