David Burman (Russian: Давид Семёнович Бурман; born 13 November 1961, Chernivtsi, Ukrainian SSR) is a Russian theatre director and producer, founder and president of the International Festival KUKART, and director of the nonprofit organization Interstudio.[1]
He holds citizenship in both Russia and Israel.[2] Burman is a member of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation, as well as professional organizations such as UNIMA, AVIAMA, and ENCATC.[3] He lives and works in Saint Petersburg.
Early life and education
David Burman was born into a large Jewish family (with five children) in Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia Oblast. His father, Semyon Mikhailovich Burman, was a glassblower (died 2007), and his mother, Bella Mikhailovna Burman, was a medical worker. He spent his childhood and youth in Uzhhorod.[4]
"I have loved puppet theater since I was ten years old, ever since a hook-nosed Petrushka puppet fell into my hands (it was with him that glove puppets first appeared). My professional career also began with puppet theater—my first profession was as a puppet actor. As Andrei Tolubeyev said: 'In certain moments, puppets can be more honest and sincere than dramatic actors.'"[5] David gained his first acting experience in the "Rovesnik" theater studio under the direction of Lev Lutsker.[6]
David attended secondary schools No. 3 and No. 9 in Uzhhorod, then studied at technical college No. 5 and worked as an auto mechanic. He served in the Soviet Army from 1979 to 1981.[7]
Early career
After military service, Burman worked as an actor at the Zakarpattia Regional Puppet Theater.[8] He appeared in episodic roles in films: "Reportazh na pamyat" (Dovzhenko Film Studio, 1982) and "Troje na shosse" (Mosfilm, 1983).[9]
In 1983, he began studying under master Mikhail Khusid in the "puppet theater actor" program at the Orenburg Music College.[10] He graduated with honors in 1986 and was assigned to work as an actor and director at the Zhezkazgan Regional Puppet Theater from 1986 to 1990.[11]
Between 1983 and 1993, he directed 10 children's and 5 adult productions.[12] In 1983, he applied to the LGITMiK in the puppet theater department under Mikhail Korolyov, founder of the Leningrad school of puppeteers. During the acting proficiency exam, he met avant-garde director Mikhail Khusid, who suggested he enroll directly in the second year of the puppet theater program at Orenburg Music College.[13]
Higher education and "Interstudio"
In 1990, Burman entered LGITMiK, simultaneously studying in both the "Organization and Management of Theater Affairs" department (theater studies faculty) and the puppet theater directing program. He graduated in 1997 with a specialization as a "Theater Scholar-Manager."[14]
While studying, he participated in creating the "Interstudio" project, developed through a joint French-Russian actor-director course between the LGITMiK puppet theater department and the Demmeni Puppet Theatre. The founders were master Mikhail Khusid with Yuri Nolev-Sobolev (USSR) and Jose Sobrecas (France).[15]
From 1993 to 2001, Burman served as acting director of the Tsarskoye Selo branch of SPbGATI "Interstudio" and its vice-rector. In 2001, the branch was reorganized into the Federal State Institution - Institute of Innovative Programs for Advanced Training and Retraining of Cultural Workers "Interstudio." The institute's rector was Professor Elena Levshina, with David Burman as First Vice-Rector for Development.[16]
From 2008 to 2010, following Levshina's death, he served as acting rector.[17]
Later work
In 2008, after the institute ceased operations, Burman founded the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Directorate of Innovative Programs for the National Prize and Festivals for Children 'Interstudio'."[18]
From early 2011 until December 2011, he worked as an advisor to the General Director of the major commercial transport company "Kadrovy Tsentr OZhD."[19]
From December 2011 through December 31, 2012, he served as Art Director and director at the Kemerovo Drama Theater named after A.V. Lunacharsky.[20]
