Work[edit]
Painting[edit]
As an artist and abstract painter his works are considered ‘in the words’ of Kristen Hileman, curator of contemporary art at the Baltimore Museum of Art, a painter’s painter. In his paintings, the tension between opposing paradigms of structure and change is continually challenging him to look for different ways to understand the question, “What is the nature of reality?” Using abstraction, his paintings have an undertone of geometry. The geometric shapes only help to emphasize the different uses and qualities of paint. [1] The aesthetic includes a painterly approach, precision handling and an underlying sense of design through collision, tension and opposition. Carlson also strips out the conceptual and symbolic ideas for a more material message. [2] The painting’s layered surface include heavy texture, scraped areas, fresh paint and milky veils, which allude to the formation or destruction of random sequence. Without having specific objects or trappings of identifiable ‘real’ images, the paintings cross over perceptible boundaries locked to a specific meaning. The act of painting becomes the experience or ‘reality’ for the basis of the work. By combining abstract painting with concepts rooted in Taoist and Buddhist philosophy David has been constructing contemporary works that directly express the ever changing quality of experience, time, and place.
Video Art[edit]
Carlson’s digital video works are in various collections including; The Ralph and Susan Brennan Collection, New Orleans, LA, and the Embassy of Finland, permanent collection, Washington, DC. Most of his videos have germinated from collaborations with other artists and composers. Although his videos embrace a much larger spectrum of content, the main focus of the work uses the element of water as a thematic base to explore the diverse metaphors relating to the element. He sees this media as an extension of his creative vocabulary that allows for the exploration of movement, time and place.
Through video, David isolate water from its natural surroundings and place it into circumstance that opens the audience to a state of receptivity and thought not normally associated with water. Images form a bridge between the consciousness of the water and the consciousness of the viewer. The water is uncontrolled except for compositional placement and a few color and time shifts. Improvising, to isolate, as to see the quiddity of the water within the space is the objective of David’s video work.

Additional Reading[edit]
“While the poets were above all interested in the fluid and fugitive aspects of Nature, others desired, by slogging away with a hatchet and pickax, to discover the interior structure of Nature and the relationship between the separate morsels. The spirit of our friend Nature dissolved in their hands, leaving nothing but throbbing or dead parts.” ― Novalis[3] Novalis: Philosophical Writings
