David Chandler Thomas (1954 -)[1][better source needed] is an American economist and technology executive,[2] currently a professor at Ball State University,[3] where he researches emergency services (911) and macroeconomics (business cycles). He currently serves on the advisory board of the College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University.[4] Thomas has served as a representative for the technology industry as Executive Director at the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA),[2] and as Executive VP at the Technology Association of America (TechAmerica),[5] both based in Washington, D.C.
Education and personal life
He graduated from California State University with a bachelor of arts and a masters degree in economics in 2010 and received his Ph.D. in economics from George Mason University in 2015 with his dissertation titled Empirical Studies of Emergency Response Services (9-1-1) and an Examination of Moral Hazard in Health Insurance. At George Mason, he was mentored by econometrician Thomas Stratmann.[3]
Thomas was born in 1954 in Maricopa County, Arizona.[1][better source needed] He is married to Gayle Bradshaw Thomas.[6]
Business and Career
Founder and CEO of Cyma Systems (1980 to 1986)
Thomas developed one of the earliest PC accounting software products, which he sold to McGraw-Hill Book Company in 1984.[7]
Cofounder and CEO of Sage Intacct (1999 to 2005)
Thomas along with his cofounder Odysseas Tsatalos built Intacct into a leading Software as a Service company.[8] The Sage Group PLC[9] acquired Intacct for an announced 850 million dollar price including cash and stock in July 2017.
Executive Director Software and Information Industry Association (Software Division) (2005 to 2008)
Thomas served first on the software board of the Software and Information Industry Association and later as the Chairman of that board. In 1999 he was hired as the executive director of the software division of the industry association working on two coasts with efforts in Silicon Valley and in Washington D.C. [10]
Teaching and Research
Sequestered Capital Theory
Along with James E. McClure, Dr. Thomas developed sequestered capital theory as an explanation of many business cycles. Published papers on this topics include coverage of tulip mania and the 1929 Stockmarket crash.
