David Eager is an Australian academic and researcher. Eager is a notable expert on injury prevention regarding children’s play equipment and other associated structures.[1][2][3][4] Eager holds positions on many Standards Australia committees, represents Australia on several International Standards Boards, and has contributed significantly to public discourse on injury prevention via his research and publications (see list of #Publications).

Career[edit]

Eager is a researcher primarily interested in the area of injury prevention, a qualified Mechanical Engineer and a professor in the School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).[1][5]

He has conducted human factors research on the physiological and psychological aspects of the human-machine and human-environment interaction within the UTS Research Centre for Intelligent Mechatronic Systems.[6] Eager is currently working on a project investigating improved techniques and parameters for the measurement of material properties for attenuating surfacing within children’s play spaces. The aim of this research is to reduce the severity and frequency of injuries associated with falls.[6]

Eager is the current director of Safety and Forensic Engineering Pty Ltd[7] and the Australian Playground and Recreation Institute.[8] He is also the Associate Editor of the Australasian Parks and Leisure Journal[9] (education and training).[1][5] Since September 2004, David has been retained as a technical expert by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)[10] for the Accreditation and Certification of Playground Inspectors.[5] He is also the Honorary Safety Advisor for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.[1][11]

During his career, David has been awarded the Australian Postgraduate Research Award – Industry (1992–1995), best paper Faculty of Engineering, UTS (1999) and best paper at the Australian Amusement Leisure and Recreation Association (AALARA)[12] Conference (2008)[1]

In 2013, Eager was part of the consultation team on Vuly Trampolines leaf-spring trampoline.

Australian Standards[edit]

David holds representative positions on many Standards Australia[13] Committees.[1][5] Since November 1999, David has been on the Children’s Playground Equipment (CS-005) and Amusement Rides and Devices (ME/051) Committees. He has also been a member of the Sports and Recreational Equipment (CS-101) Committee since April 2006.[1][5] He is currently Chair of a number of Australian Standards Committees, comprising:

  • Trampolines (CS-100) – member and chair since April 2001;[1]
  • Artificial Climbing Structures and Challenge Course Equipment (SF/047) – member since August 2004;[5]
  • Indoor Play Areas (a.k.a. Contained Play Facilities) (ME/051-03) Committee – member since November 2005.[1]

David is also a councillor of the Board of Kidsafe[14] NSW[1][5] and a Parks and Leisure Australia[15] board member.[1]

International Standards[edit]

David represents Australia on numerous International Standards Committees. Since November 2006, David has been an invited observer on the European Standards[16] Committee for Children’s Playground and Equipment and Surfacing (CEN/TC 136SC 1).[5]

David also represents Australia on the following American Standards Committees (ASTM International):[1][5][17]

  • Forensic Sciences Technical Committee (E30) and Subcommittee E30.05 Engineering;
