David Garcia is an American professor and politician who was the Democratic Party nominee for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2014. Garcia is a Democratic candidate for Governor of Arizona in the 2018 election, against incumbent Governor Doug Ducey, a Republican.[1][2]
Early life and education[edit]
Garcia was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry, and graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor's degree, and from the University of Chicago with a Master's and Doctorate degree in education policy.[3] Prior to running for public office, Garcia worked at Arizona State University's Teacher's College as an associate professor.[4]
Political career[edit]
Garcia served in the Arizona Department of Education under two Republican superintendents, Lisa Graham Keegan and Jaime Molera.[5] In 2014, Garcia ran for the Democratic nomination for the office of Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction. He narrowly lost to the Republican nominee, Diane Douglas.[6]
Garcia announced he would run for Governor of Arizona in 2018 on April 12, 2017,[7] challenging Republican incumbent Governor Doug Ducey, due to Ducey's policies on state education reform.[8] Garcia was the first Democrat to formally enter the race.[9]
