David King Reuben is a multimedia fine artist and musician based in New York City, New York.
Biography
Reuben is the eldest of seven children, born September 5, 1988, into an Orthodox Jewish household in the London suburb of Hendon, England.[1] Following the death of his grandmother, Reuben began distancing himself from the religion.[2] After graduating from Hampstead School of Fine Art in London, David moved to New York City at age 19, the same year of his first solo exhibition at Beach Blanket Babylon in London’s Shoreditch. In New York, he completed his BA in Film and Video in 2014 at School of Visual Arts (SVA).[3]
New York and the "Madhouse"
When he first came to the city, he gained prominence almost immediately in the underground art world, and is known for his expressive portraits and tableaus.[4] His thought-provoking social commentary gained him a loyal audience and willing collaborators. So he set out to create a bohemian scene of his own design in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In an empty warehouse space on Berry Street (dubbed The Madhouse), Reuben and his cohorts threw a bacchanal every night of the week, resulting in hundreds of paintings, music, and wild, improvised DIY shows. “We used to keep the door open, because what was anyone going to steal – a painting or a song?” Reuben says.[5]
