David Edward Lee (born June 18, 1969) is a San Francisco civil rights leader, a local politician, and a political science professor.

Born in San Francisco, Lee has held many civic roles and served as a leader in many community organizations. David Lee ran for the District 1 (Richmond District) seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in California in the general election in 2012 and 2016. David Lee is running again for the District 1 seat and is on the ballot in the general election on November 3, 2020.[1]

Career and early life[edit]

Lee was born in San Francisco in 1969 and attended Wallenberg High School, which is located in the Richmond District. He received his undergraduate degree in 1991 from Hamilton College with a concentration in history. Lee went on to receive his master's degree in political science and his Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration from San Francisco State University. Lee remains a political science professor at San Francisco State, while also serving as the director of the APASS/AANAPISI (Asian Pacific American Student Success/Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution) Program at Laney College. He and his wife also own a small business in the Richmond District and have two children whom they also raised in San Francisco.

San Francisco government and community involvement[edit]

A San Francisco civil rights leader, Lee has headed the Chinese American Voters Education Committee (CAVEC) as its Executive Director since 1993. Lee has registered thousands of new voters from the Richmond, funded English as second language classes for seniors, and protected undocumented families in need of various services.

Lee has also served in leadership roles as a commissioner of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, board member of the San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR), board member of KQED, and Chairman of the United States Census Bureau’s Information Center (CIC).

He has also volunteered for community organizations by serving as Chair of the Richmond Community Police Advisory Board and a board member of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance.

Awards and recognition[edit]

Lee has received humanitarian awards including the San Francisco Foundation Leadership Award, the Wallace A. Gerbode Fellowship, and the David Jenkins Civic Leadership Award.[2]

Policies and political stances[edit]

Lee’s political stances in his campaign for SF District 1 Supervisor include creating affordable housing ownership opportunities, stabilizing local neighborhood business, and addressing the growing San Francisco homeless population in the Richmond.

Lee's other campaign priorities are bringing BART to the Richmond, enrolling more Richmond residents in Healthy SF and providing more community clinics, health centers, and hospital clinics; and increasing minority representation in city leadership.[3]
