David Lo is a computer scientist whose work focuses on software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.[5][8] He is the third Vice Provost of Research and the OUB Chair Professor of Computer Science at Singapore Management University (SMU).[9] He has held leadership roles in the software engineering research community, including being a Treasurer and Secretary of in ACM SIGSOFT and Vice Chair of the steering committee of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automated Software Engineering.[10][11]
Education
Lo received a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Nanyang Technological University in 2004 and a Ph.D. in computer science from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2008.[1] In 2023, NUS Computing listed him among the recipients of its Distinguished Computing Alumni Awards.[12]
Career
Lo joined SMU's School of Information Systems, later part of the School of Computing and Information Systems, as a lecturer in May 2008.[1] SMU described him in 2024 as OUB Chair Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Information Systems and Technology Cluster at the School of Computing and Information Systems.[8] In July 2026, he is SMU's Vice Provost of Research.[13]
In 2020, Lo co-founded the Research Lab for Intelligent Software Engineering, also known as RISE.[1] The lab conducts research at the intersection of software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.[5]
Lo led TrustedSEERs, a project on trusted intelligent work bots for software engineering, which received a National Research Foundation Investigatorship grant in the Class of 2023.[14][15]
Research
Lo's research is in software engineering and data science, including software analytics, software artefact analysis, and data-driven tools for improving developer productivity and software quality.[1] SMU has described RISE as working across AI for Software Engineering, Software Engineering for AI, Software Engineering for Emerging Technologies, and Sustainable Software Engineering.[5]
In 2021, he was named a Fellow of Automated Software Engineering for contributions to the ASE community through scientific accomplishments and service.[16] In 2022, he was elevated to IEEE Fellow for contributions to software engineering and data mining.[1] In 2023, Lo was elected an ACM Fellow for contributions to synergising artificial intelligence and software engineering for human-in-the-loop automation and software analytics.[4]
In 2025, Lo received the Foundational Contribution Award at the International Conference on Mining Software Repositories for contributions to transforming bug and test data into insights and automation that improve software quality and productivity.[17]
Several papers by Lo and his co-authors have received long-term impact or influential paper awards. In 2022, a co-authored paper on software defect management received the Most Influential Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Software Analysis, Evolution and Reengineering.[18], and a co-authored paper "An Empirical Study of Bugs in Machine Learning Systems" received the Test of Time Award at the IEEE International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering.[19] In 2025, his paper "How Practitioners Perceive the Relevance of Software Engineering Research" received a Test-of-Time Paper Award at the ACM International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering.[20], and a paper "Deep Learning for Just-in-Time Defect Prediction" received the Most Influential Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Software Quality, Reliability and Security.[21]
Academic service
Lo has held several roles within ACM SIGSOFT, including Award Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, and Member-at-Large.[22][10] He has served on ACM and IEEE Computer Society committees, including the ACM SIG Governing Board Awards Committee, the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award Committee, and the IEEE Computer Society Fellow search committee.[23][24][25]
Lo has served on editorial boards of academic journals in software engineering, reliability, information systems, and computing.[1] These journals include Communications of the ACM, ACM Computing Surveys, ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, Empirical Software Engineering, Automated Software Engineering, Journal of Software: Evolution and Process, Information Systems, and Information and Software Technology.[26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]
As of May 2026[update], Lo was listed on the steering committees of the International Conference on Software Engineering, the ACM International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering, and the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Mining Software Repositories.[34][35][36] As of the same date, he was listed as Vice Chair of the steering committee for the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automated Software Engineering.[11] He was also listed as a co-chair of the steering committee of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on AI Foundation Models and Software Engineering.[37]
Lo has chaired or co-chaired several academic conferences in software engineering and related areas. He was a general chair of ASE 2016, MOBILESoft 2020, MSR 2022, FORGE 2024, and FORGE 2025.[38][39][40][37][41]
Lo served as a program co-chair for conferences including ICSME 2018, SANER 2019, QRS 2019, ASE 2020, FSE 2024, and ICSE 2025.[42][43][44][45][46][47] In 2021, he received the IEEE Technical Community on Software Engineering Distinguished Service Award.[48][1]
