David Alexandru Luca (n. 26 iulie 2005, Cluj-Napoca) is a Romanian jazz pianist and composer known for his authentic style, characterized by a vibrant energy that transcends the traditional boundaries of the genre.
Biography
Motivated by his father's passion for jazz, David Luca began studying piano at the age of five. He shaped his artistic identity through intense musical experiences on the stages of major Romanian jazz festivals. The originality of his compositions and his personal interpretation of jazz standards and ethno-jazz arrangements have earned him extremely favorable reviews from both audiences and critics of the caliber of Florian Lungu, Virgil Mihaiu, and Radu Lupașcu. This appreciation has encouraged him to persevere and continue his journey with increased determination. After a period dedicated to the exact sciences, he chose music, stating, "For me, music is a way to express myself and to connect with others."[1]
Going from a simple hobby to a vision for the future, David was guided by professors from the "Gheorghe Dima" Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, who introduced him to the world of jazz, including Stefan Vannai, Dima Belinski, and Tiberiu Herdliscka. "Compared to the sobriety of classical music, jazz, with its richness of nuances and infinite possibilities, has always been my great love, offering me the freedom to express myself authentically and to create unique sonic worlds. I love getting lost in improvisations, experimenting with unexpected harmonies and rhythms, creating musical stories, and sharing intense emotions with listeners."[2]
Career
David Luca has a busy concert schedule and a style that combines jazz tradition with contemporary influences from free jazz, neo-soul, and ethno elements. His repertoire includes original compositions and personal arrangements of jazz standards, all presented with an expressive and dynamic approach. He has been a member of UCMR-ADA (The Union of Composers and Musicians in Romania - The Association for Copyright) since 2020.
He has participated in international workshops and courses (Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Universität Erlangen- Nürnberg, Saarwellingen, Prague) and studies Jazz Piano at Conservatorium Maastricht, under the guidance of Mike Roelofs, Billy Test, and Joachim Schönecker. He is a laureate of several jazz and composition competitions and has performed at festivals such as Gărâna Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Park, Transilvania Jazz Festival, and Gala Blues/ Jazz KAMO.

Among the works by David Luca are "Urban Musings," which received the "Berklee Aspire" scholarship from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2023, and "Țâgura"—a piece inspired by Maramureș mythology, awarded at the Jazz in the Park Competition 2024. Another composition, "Lights in the Desert," won first prize in the "Richard Oschanitzky '85" section at the Iași Jazz Festival & Competition 2024, organized by the "George Enescu" National University of Arts.

Reviews
"David Luca Quartet - a name we'll be hearing more about! ... Jazz blood doesn't turn to water! Good luck!"
"Through the improvisations and the high combustion of innovative externalizations, (...) demonstrated that they can easily surpass the value altitude expected for his age."
"From my position as an expert on the Romanian jazz scene (with a special focus on the Transylvania region, where I was born and have worked my entire life), I can say that the appearance of a talent such as Mr. Luca is a valuable phenomenon that fully deserves the necessary support from those who can offer it."
- Virgil MIHAIU, jazzologist, writer, doctor of philosophy, diplomat, founder and professor of the Jazz Aesthetics Course at the "Gheorghe Dima" National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, representative of Romania on the editorial committees of Jazz Forum and Down Beat
