David Marc de Ferranti (born November 19, 1945) is an American economist[1] known for his contributions to international development, particularly in health financing and social policy in low- and middle-income countries.[2][3]He served as Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, where he contributed to economic and social reform initiatives, including pension policy development.[4]
Early life and career
David de Ferranti received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale university[5] in 1968 and later earned a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1978,[6] where his dissertation focused on welfare dependency and family structure.[7]
As Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, de Ferranti was involved in pension reform strategies in Latin America, with an emphasis on sustainability[8] and equity, working alongside colleagues Danny Leipziger and P.S. Srinivas.[4] De Ferranti later held roles at the Brookings Institution, 2005 and served as Director of the Washington office of the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie). [9]He also became the founding CEO of Results for Development (R4D), a nonprofit organization focused on international development and currently serves as its board chair.[1]
In 2012, de Ferranti led a special Lancet series on universal health coverage, highlighting the economic and social implications of expanding health services in low- and middle-income countries.[10]The series was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation[11][12]
He has held academic appointments at Havard University's School of Public Health[13]and Georgetown University’s School of Public Policy.[14]He served as Chair of the Board of Nutrition International, until he was succeeded by Masood Ahmed, in March 2025[15], and has also served on the boards of other organizations, including the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, [16]and the Inter-American Dialogue.[17]

De Ferranti has received academic honors and professional awards for his contributions to economics, international development, and public service, including:
Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Tax Association, for doctoral dissertation[18] (Tests of Seven Hypotheses on Welfare Dependency and Family Disintegration), Princeton University, 1978[19]
Phi Beta Kappa and Magna cum Laude (Latin for "with great honor"),[20]Yale University; elected to Phi Beta Kappa for academic excellence and graduated Magna cum Laude,1968.[21]

In 2023, David de Ferranti authored Reformers in International Development: Five Remarkable Lives, published by Routledge,[22]which profiles five figures in global development and their leadership in social and economic reforms.
