David Montgomery Hanna
David Montgomery Hanna (born May 27, 1967) known as, David Hanna, is an American author, historian, and educator. He is a recipient of the New York Times Teachers Make a Difference Award and a publishing partner of the United States World War One Centennial Commission.(1) He is the son of American realist painter William David Hanna,(2) also known as David Hanna.

Youth and education Hanna is the son of American realist painter, William David Hanna, also known as David Hanna. He was raised in the Pemaquid region of Maine, and attended local schools before enrolling at the University of Southern Maine, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts. He also holds a Master of Arts from New York University. He has taught at the secondary and post-secondary level since 1996, and was a 2001 recipient of the New York Times Teachers Make a Difference Award.(3)
Writing career After having his first book excerpted in The Atlantic,(4) Knights of the Sea was published in 2012, to high praise from critics. (5)(6)(7)(8)(9) Based on his experience growing up on the Maine coast, Hanna crafted a story centered around two naval commanders killed in a battle in 1813 fought off Pemaquid Point. As a young boy, Hanna’s family were the last to call the lighthouse keeper’s house, home.(10) The joint burial of the two men was immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, My Lost Youth.(11) In 2016 Hanna’s second book, Rendezvous with Death, named after another famous poem, by Alan Seeger,(12) led to a collaboration with filmmakers Darroch Greer(13) & Paul Glenshaw in the making of their documentary film, “The Lafayette Escadrille”.(14) Hanna, whose maternal grandfather John Elco served in France in 1918,(15) has also contributed to the United States World War One Centennial Commission as a publishing partner.
Hanna has been a featured lecturer at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, the Maine Maritime Museum, the Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum in New York, and the American School of Paris.
Personal life Hanna lives with his family in Morris County, New Jersey.
